This dairy/day book gives us a glimpse into the daily lives of these families. Our homemaker identifies supplies on hand as well as daily expenses. Includes reference to everyday items as milk tickets, groceries, bridge club dues, car repairs and gasoline, commisary bill, pay received, clothing, rent, electricity, ice, and more. Reference to basketball and basketball expenses has us believing the spouse was a basketball coach on the base.

Newton, Iowa, 1950's. This interesting collection represents the large part electrical appliances had on the American consumers during the post W.W.II era. The Maytag brand, originated in 1893 by Frederick Louis Maytag and three partners, initially produces farm equipment such as threshing machines. When the brand began producing gasoline powered washing machines for rural areas that had no access to electricity, the business grew. During W.W.II the company focused on designing and building parts for the war effort. After the war, the rapid expanse of suburban living made the electric powered washing machine something everyone wanted. The designer and inventor, Downer P. Dykes was a young man just starting out in the appliance industry when he helped design the "Fabric Treatment Machine" for Maytag. Portsmouth, N.H.: The Stovene Manufacturing Company, c. 1895. Loose_leaf. Printed Bag. Very good. 21 x 10.5 cm. Buy a mitten for 15 cents and get a ten-cent box of Stovene [stove polish] free! The shine on your stove lasts twice as long when polished with Stovene as when blackened with other stove polishes. Stovene stove polish was manufactured by the Stovene Manufacturing Co. of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The company was formerly called John Torrey Manufacturing Company, but was renamed in 1895. Advertising in the 19th century, once again targeting women in the domestic sphere. Gussested paper bag; folded flat; text imprinted on upper panel. Rubber stamped at top "S.O.S. Defiance 2." Manufacturer's hole punch at top of lower panel. Minor wear at some edges.
