Originally published as 'Songs on an old Lute' in 1903 this collection of Holz's poems inspired by the poetry of the Baroque era was expanded and reissued under the title here. It was the most successful of Holz's works and frequently reprinted. This copy is an attractive early edition in an unusual binding.

The standard work on Mytton was by "Nimrod" (Charles James Apperley), published in 1837, shortly after Mytton's death. Other books on Myton are by Jean Holdsworth, Richard Darwall and Edward Newton.

The work is a historical narrative based on supposed demonic possession and other situations leading to mass hysteria occurring in 17th century rural France and centering on a Catholic priest supposed to have made a pact with Satan. It's considered one of Huxley's best works.

The village in question is Feniton, a neighbour to both Honiton and Ottery St Mary, in east Devon. The paper was originally read to the Devonshire Association for the Advancement of Science, Literature, and Arts and publiched in the Transactions of the Society in 1929. It covers information about the village in the 16th to 18th centuries.
