This is a first trade edition of the 8th novel (1994) by the English biographer, author and critic Peter Ackroyd (1949-).
It is still in its original plastic wrapper. 6" x 9 1/4"It is a murder mystery framed with a story featuring real historical characters, including Karl Marx and George Gissing. It is set around a music hall in Victorian London just before the emergence of Jack the Ripper. It was made into a movie in 2015 and has since been adapted for opera and television.

The Darien Disaster refers to a series of events which took place from 1698-1700, when the Scots defied the English and Spanish and tried to establish a settlement in Panama. What transpired cost 2,000 Scots their lives and firmly marked the end of Scotland's attempt at independence. It remains a scar on the Scottish psyche.The Darien Disaster, A Scots Colony in the New World 1698-1700 was written in 1968 by the preeminent authority on Scottish history, the Canadian-English journalist John Prebble (1915-2001). It was a best-seller and was re-issued by Edinburgh's Mainstream Publishing in 1978, as a trade paperback which, oddly, has a dust jacket. It is 366 pages, including lots of images. It has one dogear and a gift inscription in the front (father to daughter) but is in excellent condition.

This is a first edition of Dark Torrent at Glencoe, a 1960 novel by the British lawyer and crime novelist Edward Grierson (1914-1975). The dust cover, which is unclipped, is not in the best shape but is OK. This is a collection of five novels by the great American crime writer Dashiell Hammett (1894-1961). Hammett is known for creating enduring characters such as Sam Spade and Nick and Nora Charles. Many of his novels were made into films.The novels in this book are Red Harvest, The Dain Curse, The Maltese Falcon, The Glass Key and The Thin Man. The book has not been read. Other than significant darkening of the pages, and the remnants of price tag glue on the (unclipped) dust jacket cover, it is in mint condition, with no marks of any kind in it or on it.

This is a near-perfect copy of David Copperfield, the classic story of the life of a Victorian boy by Charles Dickens which he began publishing in 1849. This is a 1964 British edition.
This is a handsome copy. It is green flexible leather boards with a silver foil and navy blue design on the cover and spine. 4" x 6", 798 pages.
Two tiny drops of that navy ink dotted the cover. There is minor soiling to the sides of the pages. There is minor waving to the paper from improper storage. But it appears to be un-read. Inside, the binding is tight and the pages are bright, clean and clear.

This is an unread first edition of David Milne, a 1991 book about the Canadian artist (1992-1953) who is now regarded as one of the greatest painters of his generation. His work is generally classified as 'modernist' and his focus was mainly landscapes although, as this book shows, his choice of subjects were widely varied. The book contains 150 plates, of color paintings and his black and white drawings.Co-published in 1991, by the McMichael Gallery near Toronto, and the Vancouver Art Gallery. This book has spent its life lying on its side on a shelf. Until now, it was never opened. So it's pristine, although there may be a little yellowing to the edges of the pages.224 clean, creamy white pages. Essays from several art historians and curators are included.Mint condition. Lovely book.

This is ex-library, but it's a lovely book, in excellent condition. You can easily remove all of the library fittings.In its main A-Z section, this British publication covers ground not often explored by American guides to antiques and collectibles, including Axminster carpets, "Billies and Charlies,'' fairings, garden gnomes, and trench art. This book was published by T Nelson & Sons--it is the UK edition, published in 1889.
The boards are a nice dark cherry red, with the title and a design etched into the cover.
The text and design on the spine are bright gold.
There are a couple of minor marks on the covers, and some dark colouring on the spine. Inside, the spine is tight.
There is an unusual lack of shelf wear to the edges of the covers, as if it was stored in a drawer.
Pages 320-323 have a 2" tear from the bottom and will have to be restored.
The pages are darkened, as you would expect from a book of this age, but it is perfectly readable. A lovely old book.
The Deerslayer, or The First War-Path (1841) was the last of James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales to be written. You'll find some of these books listed as first editions and dated 1965, or 1957. The first edition in French was printed in 1957; the first in English was printed in 1958. This is a copy of that first edition.
It is a serious work of art history, and includes survey notices, exhibition texts and comments to and from collectors.

That includes 86 pages about Edgar Degas--his life and work, including illustrations and sketches.
Then there are 152 pages of plates. Most are black and white, and there are many black and white sketches and drawings.
There are 35 heliogravure (photogravure) color plates. These are tipped in, or hand-mounted, meaning that they are easily removed for framing.
But they are on different paper--a beige linen paper. You can remove the whole page and use the linen in the frame, or you could put your own backing on.

This is a first edition of the Crosby Still & Nash hits up to 1970, and the full music from the Crosby Still Nash & Young hit album Deja Vu (1970).The only song missing is Woodstock (which belongs to Joni Mitchell). There are two tables of contents--the Deja Vu contents, and the full list (see scans).Total is 19 songs.104 pages, including complete lyrics and some black and white photos of the band.This was produced by Warner Bros and they cut corners on the production costs. They used a thick, porous paper, which attracted dust and dirt, and which didn't hold its glue. The glue quickly dried out.The result is that the covers are quite soiled. And the book is now in two pieces--it fell apart at page 22 (Our House). This is a first Canadian edition, and the publisher's review copy, of Dermaphoria, the second novel (2006) of the American author Craig Clevenger. It is "Puzzle Fiction", with surreal confusion brought about by the character's use of a hallucinogenic drug.
This copy includes the publisher's news release. There is no evidence that it has been read. It is in mint condition.
