He became a Jesuit in 1558 and in 1593 was the first Jesuit to be made a cardinal (by Clement VIII). He was considered one of the most learned men of his time. This 1881 edition adds a preface and some revision of what the author calls in the preface "some of [the work's] realstic features." The Danites were a Mormon fraternal organization and vigilante group. BAL 13779.

This one of 99 copies printed for the Leipsiger Bibliophilen-Abend at the Leipzig Academy of Graphic Arts (Staatliche Academie fur graphische Kunste und Buchgewerbe). (1888-1962). Hans Alexander Mueller's copy with limitation/subscriber leaf in his name (Dieses Exemplar Nummer 62 ist fur HANS ALEXANDER MUELLER gedruckt worden). Mueller (1888-1962) taught at the Academie for nearly 20 years before emigrating to the United States in the 1930s. Introduction and English translation of the work followed by a facsimile of the 1585 Christoph Plantin edition (in Dutch). De Deinde (the art of tenths) essentially established the use of decimal arithmetic in Europe, though the concept had been introduced by Arab mathematicians in the early fifteenth century.
