Uncommon for a copy of this work in such a lovely condition.With the tipped in price note and the acquisition details on a pink slip of paper as called for.Norman Douglas wrote this work as a reply to D.H Lawrence's attack on Maurice Magnus in his introduction to 'Memoirs of the Foreign Legion'. Douglas and Lawrence were both friends of Magnus, and Douglas was his literary executor. Lawrence's introduction to the memoir was used to sell the book, but Douglas felt he had maligned his dear friend. This feud between Douglas and Lawrence was long-running and this publication was the first foray into the public sphere of the voicing of Douglas' distaste. First edition of the work, rebound in half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Written by English journalist, poet and novelist, George Robert Sims. Initially, Sims became known for his satirical pieces for 'Fun' Magazine, although he then used his platform to address social reform, focusing on the poor conditions in areas of London. In 1877, Sims began contributing to 'The Referee' sports and entertainments magazine, using the pseudonym Dagonet. This was so successful that compilations of these works were published, including this work, 'The Dagonet Ballads'.
