Description:
Bwa - Burkina Faso. Bwa. PLANK MASK - BWA - BURKINA FASO. An exceptional and elegant mask from of Bwa people of Burkina Faso in West Africa. Circa 20th Century. 81 inches tall, 10 inches wide, about 9 inches deep at the mask (lower 12 3/4 inches), with the "head-dress" portion about 3/4 inch in thickness, the whole carved from a single board. In excellent condition. The mask was presented to its American liaison officer by the Burkina Faso team at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. The thinness and lightness of the piece indicates it was made for and used in dance ceremonies rather than as an export or tourist piece, which are often too heavy to be used for dancing. Most of the modern masks of this type which we have seen are more brightly colored, less elegantly proportioned, and not as skillfully carved as this example. Masks play an important role in the renewal ceremonies of the Bwa. The masks are danced during initiation ceremonies for young men and women, and appear at funerals and memorial… Read More

In very good condition, despite creases at the top of the sheet, and at the bottom right corner. Three couples at the dance marathon: the couple in the foreground clearly exhausted but still dancing styishly, the couple behind them perhaps a bit fresher, and in the background a couple seated, perhaps resting, or dropped from the competition. "Phyllis "Pele" Murdock de Lappe was an American artist, known for her social realist paintings, prints, and drawings. She also worked as a journalist, newspaper editor, illustrator, and political cartoonist. de Lappe had been a resident for many years in Berkeley, California and later, Petaluma, California." (Wikipedia). In her self-published memoir "Pele: A Passionate Journey Through Art and the Red Press" DeLappe mentions visiting and participating in dance marathons in New York in the 1930s.

Description:
R, Hilla. DANCING COUPLE (NOEL COWARD AND GERTRUDE LAWRENCE?). Pencil on paper, not dated, but likely 1930-1931. Signed in pencil lower left.12 3/4 x 8 5/8 inches. Hansomely framed to 19 x 15 1/2 inches. The subjects of the drawing bear a strong resemblance to Gertrude Lawrence and Noel Coward, who starred together in his play Private Lives in 1930 (London) and 1931 (New York). R was in London in 1930 with the Guggenheims and back in New York in 1931, so it is not unlikely that she would have seen the play.
