He is holding a huge copy of Mao's Selected Works high above his head with one hand, while holding another pocket size copy of Mao's quotations in the other. China.. (Circa1974.).. Very interesting 14 page scrapbook of cartoons and comic strips from what appears to be a variety of newspapers and publications, although the names and dates are not given. These cartoons all depict the "Criticize Lin Biao and Confucius" campaign of the mid-1970s. Covers show minor marking, but the overall condition is very good. 37 x 26.3cm. A collection of significant historical interest. This cartoon strip, adapted from a historical story published in the Beijing Daily by the People's Art Press, was originally featured in a March 1974 Railway Corps paper. While the provenance of the other cartoons is uncertain, some bear the signatures of their artists. .

Papercut features a fierce looking young Red Guard in the centre, smashing a pile of books, religious sculptures and items considered as the 四旧 [Four Olds] into pieces. Behind him, a view of hundreds of Red Guards occupy the streets and buildings, while others march forward with Red Guard flags. Very good condition. Block of text upper margin in Chinese, papercut sheet measures 70.7x 50.9cm. Text upper margin reads "Scatter the old world, build a new world." The image of smashing symbolically conveys the determination of the Communists to break from the Four Olds (Old Customs, Old Culture, Old Habits, and Old Ideas). The campaign to 破四旧立四新 [Destroy the Four Olds and Cultivate the Four News] began in Beijing in August 1966. .

Traditional silk tied binding, all edges gilt. Cloth slightly marked and rubbed at edges and corners, cloth along joints worn with a little loss in one tiny area but a good firm copy. 22 x 30cm. An album to commemorate the training squadron's main cruise to the West coast of the US which took place in 1917. The year of the cruise appears on the title page. The naval cadets who graduated from the Naval College in Etajima in September 1916 started their sailing training on two war ships, the Tokiwa and the Yakumo, by embarking on a cruise within Japan and later to Qingdao, Port Arthur and Korea. Published in 1934, this collection of photos takes the reader on a journey through Manchukuo, from the port of Dairen (Dalian), the main entry point for most Japanese visitors, to the remoter regions of Jehol and Mongolia. The photographs are accompanied by brief titles in English and slightly more detailed descriptions in Japanese. The black-and-white photographic illustrations are quite small, but varied and interesting in content. Colour photographic poster showing the Japanese Antarctic Ice Breaker, Fuji, in the Antarctic ice, 73 x 51.5cm, some light creasing with small repaired tears at edges and crease at upper corner, very good condition. The Japanese Antarctic ice breaker, Fuji, was in service between 1965 and 1983 transporting staff and goods between Japan and the Japanese Antarctic base over this 18 year period. After Fuji was taken out of the service, it was moored in Nagoya Port and is now on permanent display. The exhibitions and displays which now accompany the ship's display show the Japanese effort that has been put into Antarctic research and the difficulties the crew and research staff encountered along the way. This poster was produced for a large scale Antarctic exhibition held at Chita Beach Land around 1985 marking the ship's arrival in Nagoya as a permanent display. A little worming in places on the map and cover, light soiling on colour pictorial cover and lower cover but still a very attractive map. This colourful and attractive pictorial map of Japan from around 1865 shows the mainland Japan, Shikoku and Kyushu. Hokkaido and Ryukyu are not included. The map can be folded into a compact size (18.3 x 8.7 cm) and a relevant section can be read without unfoldiing the whole map. Various roads, including the Tokaido, the Nakasendo, the Kiso and the Oshu are marked as well as some pilgrim routes of Ise, Saigoku and Konpira routes. Legends include castle towns, border checking gates, famous shrines and temples, and 33 temples of the Western Japan Pilgrimage are marked as well as sea routes.
