Jessie Chambers was the model for Miriam in Sons and Lovers and knew Lawrence perhaps more intimately than anyone during his adolescence and early manhood. He would later say to her, ''You were the anvil on which I hammered myself out.''This copy belonged to Louie Burrows who was Lawrence's fiancée from 1910 to 1912 at which date he met Frieda Weekly with whom he would spend the rest of his life. There are numerous marginalia in Burrows' hand, some adding clarity to the text, some questioning it, and others giving pithy insight. Laid in is a small sheet, also with about 130 words in her hand, again giving her view of Lawrence's relationships, including the poignant sentence, ''I made no claim - had no claim - so he had no need to mollify me.'' Dustwrapper designs and black-and-white drawings by Edward Wolfe.Inscribed by the artist on the front free endpaper: "with best wishes Edward Wolfe". Edward Wolfe (1897-1982) joined Roger Fry's Omega Workshops in 1917, where he painted abstract designs on textiles and ceramics. From 1918 he was exhibiting with the London Group, alongside Duncan Grant, McKnight Kauffer and Vanessa Bell. Wolfe was one of the first British artists to become attracted to, and influenced by, Modigliani and Matisse. He was called "England's Matisse" because of his vibrant use of colour. Cover edges a little bruised. Very good indeed in very good, slightly marked dustwrapper a little rubbed and creased at the edges.
