DANIEL WEBSTER (1782-1852). Webster, a Massachusetts and New Hampshire Congressman, served as Secretary of State in the Harrison/Tyler and Fillmore administrations. He unsuccessfully ran for President in 1836 and became the premier Senator and orator of his day. SB. 88pg. 1847. Philadelphia. A printed speech signed “For Mr. Callamare From D.W.” on the top margin. The speech is entitled “Dinner To The Hon. Daniel Webster…By The Merchants, and Other Citizens of Philadelphia, December 6, 1846”. The speech is in fine condition and has been rebound into a more modern binding; there is a Dartmouth College label on the inside of the front cover.

WALTER HOUGH (1859-1935). Hough was an American ethnologist and a curator at the United States National Museum in Washington D.C., which is now The Smithsonian Institution. SOPHUS MÜLLER (1846-1934). Müller was a Danish archaeologist and director of the National Museum of Denmark. LS. 1pg. February 17, 1897. Copenhagen. A letter signed “Sophus Müller” as Director of Denmark’s National Museum, on museum letterhead. Müller writes to Walter Hough, who was then an assistant curator of ethnology at the United States National Museum. The letter concerns a stone lamp from Greenland owned by the U.S. National Museum. To reply to your favored of January 17, I very much regret not being able to furnish any exact information respecting the locality of the Eskimo stone lamps in your museum. DAVID RITTENHOUSE (1732-1796). Rittenhouse was an American inventor, clock maker, mathematician, stateman and financier. He was the first director of the United States Mint and belonged to the American Philosophical Society. JOHN NICHOLSON. Nicholson was a Revolutionary-era Pennsylvania state official. He partnered with Robert Morris in western land speculation that bankrupted both. He was sent to debtor’s prison in 1800 and died there shortly thereafter. ALS. 1pg. 8 ¼” x 6 ½”. January 20, 1787. No place [likely Philadelphia]. A rare autograph letter signed “D. Rittenhouse” addressed to John Nicholson. Rittenhouse was then the Treasurer of the State of Pennsylvania: “I think it will be difficult to prevent the Collectors from taking the Dollar Money in Taxes and I know no better way of preventing them from cheating than to allow Interest to the County Treasurer to the first of January 1787 only. SB. 191 pg. 5 ¾” x 8 ½”. No date. No place. A book Putting Electrons To Work inscribed on the first end page “To Murray & Flo With all good wishes Dave”. The hardcover book was written by John Tebbel and published in 1963. There is some wear to the dustjacket but it is in fine condition.

EDWARD ORD (1818-1883). Ord, a Union Civil War general, fought at Vicksburg and in the Appomattox campaign. DS. 2pg. 17” x 14”. July 31, 1864. Near Petersburg [Virginia]. A large, partly printed document signed “E O C Ord” as Major General commanding. It concerns “Unserviceable Ordnance Stores” from the Second Regiment of New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. The Second Regiment was involved in assaulting Petersburg from June 15 to 19, and sieging Petersburg from June 16, 1864 to April 2, 1865. This document is dated the day after the famous Battle of the Crater at Petersburg. There is also a rubber stamped signature of General Benjamin Butler. It has mailing folds and is in fine condition. Ord signed on the verso.

WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON (1773-1841). Harrison was the nineth and shortest-serving President. He held office for only a month. (POTAWATOMI NATION). A Native-American nation from the Great Lakes area, especially Michigan and Wisconsin, the Potawatomi belonged to the Northwestern Confederacy. This was an association of nations that formed after the American Revolution to protect their interests against those of the new United States. The Confederacy battled U.S. forces in the Northwest Indian War of 1786-95, which ended in defeat for its native participants. The Treaty of Greenville ended the war and forced the Confederacy to accept American governmental rulership and the loss of lands. The Potawatomi were involved in the fur trade and other trading. WILLIAM DE WOLF HOPPER (1858-1935). Hopper was an American actor, singer, and comedian. PS. 7.25” x 9.25”. 1924. N.p. [Washington D.C.] A black-and-white photograph inscribed and signed “To little Sweetie Aires with my best wishes De Wolf Hopper”. Mary “Sweetie” Aires was one of Hopper’s young co-stars in the 1924 Washington D.C. production of the musical Wang. Hopper had premiered Wang in New York in 1891. The photo is attached to the inside front cover of a thin binder with a drawing of the Wang elephant on the cover. On the inside back cover is a signed photograph by another Hopper co-star. “To Sweetie Aires with best wishes from Ethel Clark”. The pages in between contain press cuttings about Aires and the three other young co-stars of the Washington production. The Hopper photograph is in good condition with some tape and wear to the edges, especially the right edge that meets the binder’s spine.

DEAN RUSK (1909-1994). Rusk was Secretary of State under Kennedy and Johnson. WILLIAM McCORMICK BLAIR, JR. (1916-2015). Blair was Ambassador to Denmark and the Philippines. PS. 7 3/4” x 9 7/8”. N.d. N.p. A black-and-white photograph inscribed and signed “With high esteem and appreciation for my friend and colleague Bill Blair Dean Rusk” on the wide bottom margin. Rusk was Secretary of State during both of Blair’s Ambassadorial appointments. It is in very good condition, the photograph is slightly curled and has mounting remnants on the verso.

Various Individuals on Charge of Aiding and Abetting in Cock Fighting. The letter from the law firm of Smith & Maine explains the subsequent documents: "A transcript of the docket of 'Squire Johnston in connection with proceedings against a substantial number of individuals on charges of aiding and abetting in cock fighting has been handed to me for attention. It is my understanding that the Court directed the County Controller to make an audit or investigation of the record in the hands of 'Squire Johnston to determine the present status of affairs with particular reference to collection and disposition of certain fines and forfeitures. The transcript seems to fully set forth the desired information and I will be prepared to discuss the matter with you at your convenience." ALS. 1pg. 8” x 10”. December 19, 1852. Rowley [Massachusetts]. An autograph letter signed “Thomas H. Adams” discussing the moderate earthquake that struck eastern Massachusetts on November 27, 1854: “I have not much news to write…that night at about half past seven I was up & walking acrost the room, when the house, store, tea kettle & almost everything in the house was shaken by an Earth quake, which took the folks out of bed like going to a…it lasted about a minute & a half & past off with out doing damage…”. The letter is in fine condition overall and written on blue paper.

ALS. Clinton, a New York City Mayor and New York Governor, was the prime force behind the Erie Canal. He unsuccessfully ran against James Madison for President in 1812. DS. 1pg. 7 ½" x 9 ½". 2d Jany 1807. New York. A document signed "DeWitt Clinton" as Mayor of New York City. He attested that "John Pritchard of the City of New York, being duly sworn deposed and saith that Mary Hanson, Widow and relict of John Hanson, late of the City of New York, deceased... is at present living and residing in the city of New York... ". Attached is a handwritten letter from Many Hanson addressed to Archibald McIntyre, stating that she is enclosing "the vouchers that entitle me to receive the quarterly payment due the first Instant... ". The bottom of the Clinton page was removed, and the document has the usual mailing folds

(JAPAN). Diary. January 14, 1950 to late 1954. Various places [Philadelphia, Japan, Fort Meade]. A lengthy diary of an American officer, Lieutenant Louis T. Holtz, who was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. It was written on dozens of sheets of loose-leaf notebook pages, and it contains many black and white photographs with captions, as well as newspaper and magazine cutouts and brochures from places he visited. The diary begins on January 14, 1950 in Philadelphia, and he discuses seeing shows and such, but notes that “All in all, this constituted a very enjoyable ten days of leave prior to going overseas. Sometimes I wish I could stay at home and live a normal routine life like everyone else. DIOSDADO MACAPAGAL (1910-1997). Macapagal was President of the Philippines from 1961 to 1965. WILLIAM McCORMICK BLAIR, JR. (1916-2015). Blair was U.S. Ambassador to Denmark and the Philippines. LS. 1pg. September 29, 1967. 92 Cambridge Circle, Makati, Rizal, Philippines. A letter signed “Diosdado Macapagal” as former President of the Philippines and written on his letterhead in another hand. As William Blair prepared to leave his post as U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines, Macapagal sent him this warm letter thanking him for his stay. “Dear Ambassador Blair: Ms. Macapagal and I thank you beyond words can express for having us at The delightful dinner at The Embassy the other night. It was particularly memorable for us since it was on the eve of my birthday. An autograph document signed “Charles W A Morton” to Mr. Biggs: “As Mr. Biggs has declined to act any longer in the capacity of second, Mr. Morton wishes to know, if Mr. Thompson has come to a definitive resolution upon the subject. Saturday was the day appointed for the encounter, and Mr. M is certainly entitled to the intermediate time for the purpose of providing his second, especially since the arrangements necessary to be made by a person acting in that relation, may be completed in a few hours. The son of a New Hampshire Governor, Badger fought in the Civil War. After that war, he was commissioned a lieutenant, assigned to the 6th Regiment of U.S. Infantry. Often stationed in Indian territory, he was later brevetted a captain for "gallant and meritorious services during the war." DS. 1pg. 11" x 16". 1883. Fort Leavenworth, KS. A partly printed document signed "Wm. Badger", the great military officer. It reads: "ABSTRACT OF FUNDS received from sales of Fuel, Forage, Straw, and other articles authorized by the War Department to be sold to officers of the U.S. Army, at Fort Leavenworth Mil. Prison, KS by Capt. Wm. Badge, 6th Inf. AA, Quartermaster... U.S. Army, during the month of July, 1883." The document goes on to list the various amounts of many paid by the different military officers for fuel, totaling $13.50. The document is in fine condition, with some toning and folds separations

DS. 1pg. 8” x 12 ½”. 1855. County of Santa Clara. A document signed “J.C. Minter Inspector” about being paid $5.00 to inspect the elections in Santa Clara, California. He also certified that Benjamin Thomas and Cornelius Frame also served. The document has fading and browning to the right margin, two tape stains at the top, and is in very good condition.

DS. 1pg. 5” x 8”. April 20, 1882. Cleveland, Ohio. A handwritten document pertaining to President James A. Garfield’s estate. It was written several months after Garfield’s death and signed “Joseph Rudolph” as administrator. Rudolph was the brother of Garfield’s wife Lucretia. It states: “Riggs and Co. Washington D.C. Pay to Bateman & Co. or order sixteen thousand seven hundred and thirty nine dollars fifty two cts. Joseph Rudolph Administrator”. Warner Bateman was a long-time, prominent Cincinnati attorney. $16,000 was a tremendous sum of money in the 1880s. The document has folds, a minor punch hole and pencil writing on it; it is in good condition.

ROBERT MORRIS (1734-1806). Robert Morris is one of the most underappreciated men of the American Revolution. An American merchant, he was elected to the Second Continental Congress in 1776, but initially voted against the Declaration. He eventually signed the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. He secured much financial assistance for the Colonial side during the Revolutionary War. He later became Washington’s first choice for Secretary of Treasury. Later, he delved heavily into land speculation, eventually buying most of western New York. Sadly, these land deals would land him in debtors’ prison from 1798 until 1801. Document. 2pg. 8 ½ x 14”. 1782. No place [presumably Philadelphia]. A document in an unknown hand concerning Robert Morris’s management of the Continental Navy, a post he started in 1781. BENJAMIN HARRISON V (1726-1791). Harrison served as the 5th Governor of Virginia between 1781-1784 and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. DS. June 29, 1784. Council-Chamber. A partly-printed document signed “Benj Harrison”: “I DO Certify, That Benjamin Smith XX of Edward Clark is entitled to the properties of land allowed a Sargeant of the Continental line, for three years service”. In addition to Harrison’s signature, “Tho Merriwether” signed the document. This document represents a land grant given to a veteran of the American Revolution. According to the Library of Virginia, the state offered bounty lands for Revolutionary War military service who had served at least three years continuously in the Continental or state forces. This land was in western Virginia, which is present-day Kentucky or Ohio. No bounty land was given by the state for militia service.
