Bound as issued in brown embossed cloth with spine stamped in gold: “Miss Austen's / Novels / Emma”; spine frayed at the head and tail; corners rubbed; boards are a bit soiled; a couple of signatures are pulled and the fore-edge of the pages are a little worn; bookplate of William Amory on the pastedown and two gift inscription on the first blank to Dorothy Amory (1894) and then to Dorothy Winthrop (1920). An early American edition that seems to be surprisingly uncommon given that Ticknor was among the more notable publishers of literary fiction in the mid-19th century. OCLC shows only a handful of institutions holding Ticknor and Fields editions of Austen's work. Not listed in Keynes bibliography.
