218-227 pages with cited references. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Volume 71, number 2 complete issue. First edition. The historical record and examination of disinterred human bones indicate that venereal syphilis is very old in America but did not appear in the Old World until about 1500. Traditionally it has been believed that the disease was brought to the Old World by Columbus in the 1490s. The most popular alternative hypothesis at present is that venereal syphilis is really only one facet of a disease - treponematosis, appearing as yaws in the tropics, nonvenereal syphilis in the Middle East, pinta in Mexico, etc. - that is present wherever man has settled and has been his unshakable companion for thousands of years in all the continents. Unfortunately, the latter, or Unitarian, theory has no more claim to validity than the Columbian. The diseases mentioned are similar but we cannot be sure that they are all really the same. And the testimony of the… Read More

Recent research on the late Pleistocene of northwester North America has a considerable bearing on the study of early man in America. The first part of this paper deals with late glacial chronology and the implications of this chronology from the study of early man throughout America; the second part is an attempt at a synthesis of the early man problem in the light of the hypotheses presented in the first. First edition limited to 350 copies, of which this is number 265. Mining has been carried on in Scotland from a very early period. Gold and silver have both been found at various periods and widely spread over the country. Archaeologists found native metal from prehistoric times. The first historical notice of gold was a grant by David I, to the Abbey of Dunfermline in 1153. Gilbert of Moravia discovered gold at Duriness in 1245. The Scottish Parliament granted the Crown in 1424 all the gold mines in Scotland and all silver mines in which three halfpennies of silver could be found out of a pound lead. During the reign of James IV the gold mines in Crawfurd Moor were first discovered. This work gathers all the pertinent documents which were available to the author and are presented here for future historians to have access. Condition: Some… Read More

707-717 pages with map and cited references. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Volume 70, number 4 complete issue. First edition.Human remains firmly associated with Mousterian artifacts and exhibiting characteristics transitional between those of Neanderthal and fully modern man are known from two Levantine sites. A survey of the archeological evidence suggests that three climatic zones were differentially exploited by Neanderthal man and that some of the sites document a shift in subsistence away from a generalized hunting pattern to the specialized hunting of large, migratory herd animals. The hypothesis is offered that the formal changes documented for the Upper Paleolithic occurred in response to this basic shift in human ecology.Condition: Spine and edges sunned, light edge wear, corners bumped, rubbed and creased else very good.

144 pages with diagrams and index. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. First edition. The Dragon is in many ways the most logical way for Black to play the Sicilian. He develops his pieces quickly and aggressively, challenging White to attack before Black consolidates his positional pluses, or turns them into a devastating counterattack. The Easy Guide to the Dragon shows Black's best responses to all lines, focusing particularly on the critical Yugoslav Attack. It shows up-to-date, detailed coverage by a leading Dragon specialist and includes recommendations for White. Golubev has devoted particular attention to the Yugoslav Attack with 9-0-0-0, a fashionable system which is his recommendation for White. Condition: Near fine.
