Madagascar, the world's fourth-largest island, is a land where lizards scream and monkey-like lemurs sing songs of inexpressible beauty. Description:
Eos, 1998. Mass Market Paper. Very Good +. From Library Journal - In his second novel, following No Man's a Mountain (Mayhaven, 1996), physics professor Cramer writes elegantly about the ramifications from the high-particle physics superconducting supercollider (SSC). Two alien races notice the SSC activities: the Hive assimilates and destroys civilizations while the Makers share knowledge. In a race toward first contact with Earth, we can only hope the Makers reach us first. Recommended for hard sf collections. Book is in very good condition with mild edge wear, rubbed along edges and spine. Doesn't appear to have been read.

Description:
New York: Free Press, 1997. Second printing. Hardcover. 312 p. Includes an Index and 16 pages of black & white photographs. When a machine-gun bullet ended the life of war correspondent Ernie Pyle in the final days of World War II, Americans mourned him in the same breath as they mourned Franklin Roosevelt. To millions, the loss of this American folk hero seemed nearly as great as the loss of the wartime president. If the hidden horrors and valor of combat persist at all in the public mind, it is because of those writers who watched it and recorded it in the faith that war is too important to be confined to the private memories of the warriors. Above all these writers, Ernie Pyle towered as a giant. Through his words and his compassion, Americans everywhere gleaned their understanding of what they came to call "The Good War". Pyle walked a troubled path to fame. Though insecure and anxious, he created a carefree and kindly public image in his popular prewar column-- all the while… Read More

With the Atlantic seaboard closed by the British blockade, Isaac Biggs, Jack Clements, and Jake Tate, fresh from their harrowing adventures in Canada, find berths with Joshua Barney's Gunboat Flotilla in the Chesapeake Bay. These swift and shallow-draft vessels have become a thorn in the side of the British fleet, and the British command is determined to destroy them. Description:
New York: Basic Books, 2003. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/very good. Long couched only in theological terms, and popularly personified by the despots of history, the nature of evil has resisted explanation. In this singular survey of this mysterious but all too often palpable force, veteran Time magazine writer Lance Morrow examines the unmistakable ways evil influences our global culture-and how that global culture in turn has magnified evil's menace. Its dramatic reemergence in the national consciousness-against a backdrop of high-tech, sensationalized violence-makes his updated understanding both timely and absolutely necessary.Drawing on examples both obscure and splashed across the headlines, Morrow seeks to understand how evil works, and what purpose, if any, it serves. From the heartrending to the harrowing, from quiet lies to catastrophic acts, his stories are drawn from over thirty years of experience as a revered journalist and essayist. The result is a brilliant synthesis of a… Read More
