Partially erased very light, barely noticeable 1923 penciled gift inscription on front free endpaper, overall bright fine copy. Jacket is lightly edgeworn on the foredge seams, two minor 1/2 inch stains at top and bottom edge, spine, and the spine is moderately darkened and edgeworn. Uncommon in jacket.

Professionally rebacked, previous owner's gift inscription and date in tiny French writing ("a J de J, Juin 1915") on verso of frontis. Light edgewear, tips bumped. Some creasing to front endpapers from cover stress and moderate discoloration and foxing isolated to the endpapers and last blank page.The plates, tissue guards and pages are very sharp and bright. Arguably Nielsen's finest book among the very few he illustrated. The ornate gilt pictorial cover is a masterpiece of contemporary design. The plates are imaginative and gorgeous. It has been often reprinted in various editions though the reproduction seldom lives up to the original; Taschen recently did quite a nice job on their modern edition.
