Description:
Paris: Lewis Barnascone, 1901. Staplebound. Very good +. 24mo, 32pp., illustrated. A positively charming little trade catalogue in shiny burgundy foil wraps with Art Nouveau gilt illustration. A tinge foxed at the extremities, but overall quite nice; certainly very good or better. This trade catalogue advertises motorcycle and automobile accessories to the nouveau riche crowd in Paris - seats, saddles, odometers, bags, lights, and more. It's an interesting mix of technical necessities and luxury accessories, and there is at least one engraved illustration on every page. We can locate no copies of this catalogue or any similar examples within a 20-year publication window in worldwide libraries. An excellent piece of early automobiliana. Text in French.

Description:
[Chicago]: [no publisher or printer stated], 1911. Accordion binding. Near fine. Accordion-folding postcard, with a total of 16 panels, including cover and designated writing/address panel. In near fine condition, bright and well-reserved, with a tiny marginal hole to the front panel and a touch of dust-soiling to same. A vanishingly rare souvenir from one of the very first American aviation meets, held in Chicago's Grank Park in mid-August, 1911. Organized by Chicago aviator and industrialist Harold F. McCormick, the meet was perhaps the largest in world history up to that point, and, as was typical at the time, a few world records were set during the events. The fearless Lincoln Beachey, for example, broke the then-record for altitude, climbing to over 11,000 feet. Two pilots died in tragi accidents, including Chicago's own St. Croix Johnstone, who drowned after his engine failed while soaring over Lake Michigan. Johnstone is pictured in this postcard, with a close-up view of the dashing pilot in…

New York: Fleming H. Revell, 1894. First Edition (?). Hardcover. Near fine. 12mo, 90pp. A crisp, clean copy, near fine, in the publisher's white cloth. A few small stains and a touch of foxing to the cloth, and the fore-edge of the first few leaves with a tiny nick, else very nice indeed. This copy in the rare printed dust jacket, with a few small edge tears and chips, but nicely preserved. A book of religious poetry aimed at a young audience. Obviously rare in the dust jacket, though the book itself is genuinely scarce, as well. We couldn't trace it at auction, and found just a single physical holding in OCLC, at Brown.

Description:
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1894. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good +. Small quarto, 215pp., illustrated. A crisp, clean copy, near fine, with a large but extremely faint dampstain along the spine; inconspicuous. In the rare dust jacket, with some small chips, tears, and flattened creases, but very good or better. Annie Fields, who at the time of publication was in her second decade of widowhood, had been devastated by the loss of her husband, and withdrew from society, though she eventually developed a close companionship with Maine author Sarah Orne Jewett. This volume is divided into three essays: "Leigh Hunt," "Edinburgh," and "From Milton to Thackeray." Clearly a well-educated person and highly interested in literature, one can imagine that the loss of her husband was more than romantic; the two must have been able to carry on long and serious discussions about literature and the arts. This volume, printed on heavy coated paper, is usually found in much worse condition, and…

Description:
New York: E. P. Dutton, 1886. First Edition (?). Hardcover. Near fine/Fair. Small quarto, 64pp., illustrated. A fresh, clean copy, near fine, with gentle dust-soiling to the top edge, and age-toning to the first and last few leaves, due to the acid in the endpapers. In the vanishingly scarce dust jacket, with two amateur repairs at the front flap and front spine joints, and some edge chips, but retaining the entirety of the front illustration and spine title; overall in fair condition, but presenting nicely in a clear jacket protector. A gift inscription dated Christmas 1886 suggests the likely publication date, making this a very early dust jacket.

Description:
London / New York: Ernest Nister / E. P. Dutton, 1892. First Edition. Sewn binding. Fine/very good. Square small quarto, unpaginated [14pp.]. Printed in Nuremberg by E. Nister. Date from OCLC. A fine, fresh example in the publisher's decorative sewn wraps, and the frightfully rare dust jacket; very good, with some medium chips, closed tears, and a few clear tape repairs to verso, though these weren't really necessary; the jacket is complete and in one piece. The book is a religious celebration of Christmas in verse, with some lovely Victorian illustrations and Bible verses. The book itself is quite uncommon; we have never seen one in a dust jacket, and cannot trace any at auction or in recent commerce described as having the jacket. A supremely lovely Christmas book; rare thus.

Description:
Munich / New York: Opbacher Brothers, 1890. First Edition. Sewn binding. Fine/near fine. Oblong octavo, unpaginated [16]pp., illustrated. A fine, fresh copy in the publisher's illustrated thin cardstock covers and sewn binding, with all edges gilt. In what must be an exceedingly rare dust jacket, printed in the same type as is used on the title page. Jacket near fine, with only very small chips at the extremities, and a tiny stain on the rear panel. A scarce little book, with wonderful illustrations, which presents views of the Statue of Liberty and other New York Harbor sites (The Brooklyn Bridge, the Battery, views of boats on the river, etc.) alongside notable poems by Robert Sonthey, Thomas G. Appleton, and Richard H. Stoddard, as well as the arranger, Mathews. OCLC records fewer than a half dozen holdings, and none of these mentions a dust jacket. A great piece of New York ephemera.

New York: The American News Company, 1882. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. Octavo, 593pp. "Excelsior edition." A very fine, fresh, clean copy in the publisher's green cloth, stamped in black and gilt. Touch of rubbing in a few places, but an exceedingly sharp example. Contemporary gift inscription on a front blank. In the extremely rare dust jacket, matching the pattern of the cloth. Some shallow chips and creases to extremities, but remarkably well-preserved; near fine. The jacket extends beyond the height of the boards by about 1/4 of an inch, which might explain why so few of these late 19th century dust jackets have endured; it's the first of its kind that we have encountered. The book's publication date is approximate; the publisher's address of "39 and 41 Chambers Street" indicates a date no earlier than 1877, and no later than 1909. Its high Victorian style is much closer to the binding fashions of the 1880s than of the 1900s. In fact, the cloth and stamping match exactly that of a copy of "Tom…

Chicago: A. C. McClurg, 1891. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. Octavo, 89pp. A near fine, crisp copy in the publisher's white cloth, stamped in gilt. Just a touch of mild edgewar, but really a sharp example, in the original cloth dust jacket, re-creating the front board design. Jacket with a number of shallow chips and tears, but quite well-preserved. Gunsaulus was a civic leader in Chicago, and at the time of this book's publication was Pastor of Plymouth Church. He was influential in convincing millionaire meatpacking baron Philip Danforth Armour to donate a large sum to found Armour Institute of Technology, a research institution which ultimately was folded into the Illinois Institute of Technology. Among his many civic interests and principles, Gunsaulus was passionate about fire safety, and, having lived through the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, believed Chicago needed strong fire safety regulations and advanced fire suppression technology. This volume of poetry is uncommon, and…

Description:
Cleveland: Interstate School of Commerce, 1925. Folded brochure. Very good +. One folded brochure, which unfolds to the size of a poster (about 3.75" x 9" folded; 15" x 27" unfolded). In very good or better condition, with old folds and trivial foxing at the fore-edge of the front wrap. Fantastic ephemeral document which promotes the Interstate School of Commerce, a kind of private vocational school. When fully unfolded, a collage of more than 100 recent graduates appears, superimposed on the buildig that houses the school. Most interestingly, the school is co-educational, and seems to make very little distinction between its male and female students. At the first stage of unfolding, the following is printed: "The Field of Woman's Endeavor is an Ever Widening One." This brochure was meant to be mailed, although this example never was. There are no separate listings for this document in OCLC, and we presume it to be scarce.

New York: Chas. Eisenmann, Photographer, 1880. Very good +. One carte de visite, measuring about 2 1/2" x 4 1/8". A very good or slightly better carte de visite depicting the Lucasie family, billed as the "Eliophobus family." Mount has mild rubbing at two corners, and is mildly dust-soiled at the blank space near the bottom. Image is bright and clean. The Lucasies, an albino family from Madagascar, were "exhibited" at Barnum's New York museum for some time.

Description:
[Wheeling, WV]: [US Engineer Office?], 1908. Very good. One photograph, probably a gelatin silver print, measuring about 8.25" x 6, and tipped onto a mount with a 2-inch border. Housed in a gold-tinted contemporary frame with old finials at the corners. Photograph is well-preserved, if a bit unevenly faded. The frame shows general age wear, lacking one of the corner decorations and showing some nicks and scratches commensurate with age. The photograph depicts a group of fourteen well-dressed men in an office setting. The setting and names of the individuals are all identified on the verso, which we examined. Among the named individuals are Frank D. Howard, Frederick E. Arthur, F. C. Boggs, E. H. Groot, and others. A nice presentation of a historic image.

Description:
[Massachusetts]: B. Bailey, 1836. First Edition (?). Near fine. Engraving printed in black on white glazed cardstock; unusually thick and heavy. A tinge of dust-soiling to the outer margins, and very minor staining to the verso, but a lovely, near fine example. A wonderfully intricate and visually arresting engraving of the seventh president, containing a likeness of him in glasses at the top, and full the text of Jackson's first Inaugural Address as the main text, signed by Jackson in print at the bottom. The text, in addition to the decorative border and portrait, is entirely engraved rather than typeset. A beautifully executed presidential keepsake. OCLC records two definite holdings, at AAS and Southern Methodist, while a later (1845) memorial edition is also held by AAS. The only other holdings appear to be digital-only.

Description:
[Detroit]: Louise Burns Wright, 1962. Spiral bound. Very good-. Tall thin octavo, 200pp., illustrated. A clean, sound example in the original spiral binding, unfortunately lacking 2 leaves (pp. 23-24 and pp. 61-62; partial remains of the latter are present), otherwise very good in the original comb binding, with some leaves partially detached, but holding. A few faint marginal stains. A fantastic volume, filled with portrait headshots and brief but illuminating details about actors and other performers living in the Detroit area, and offering their services to local media. All of the individuals list their talents or accomplishments, while most also list their union or agency affiliations. The directory would certainly have been used by businesses looking for advertising models and actors, als probably also by Hollywood for any films shot on location in southern Michigan. Interspersed throughout in several places are some paid advertisements, both for talent and also for ancillary industries, such…

Description:
[no place given], 1940. Good. Three leaves, each measuring about 8" x 9.5". Cheap, brittle, age-toned paper is chipped and curled at the extremities, and a bit ripped at the folds (especially on the last leaf). In good condition only, still quite readable. 40-line holograph erotic poem, exhorting an unidentified man to perform sexually. The opening reads "Gently turn your car around/Drive me wuickly out of town/Lay my ass upon the ground/and five me a f**ing by the pound." It continues in this vein. Almost certainly authored by a woman, as one of the last lines reads, "Call 816 and ask for Sis." Whether this is a reference to prostitution is unclear. Searches for various phrases in the document do not reveal any published examples of this work. Vividly erotic, and legibly written. A curious memento of female midcentury vernacular erotica.
