Original cloth in dust jacket, not price-clipped and with Book Society's Choice printed inside front flap; pp. 543; photogravure plates, 3 folding maps; light offsetting from endpapers, minor rubbing to upper edge of wrappers, ownershi inscription to front fly-leaf; otherwise very good. First edition, and not the Book Society issue, despite the wrappers. Fitzroy MacLean's adventures as a secret agent before and during WWII, in Central Asia, Libya, and Yugoslavia, where he was charged with gaining information about Tito and operated behind enemy lines. The action on the Balkans war takes up almost 230 pages. It has been suggested that Ian Fleming used Maclean as one of his inspirations for the James Bond character.

Includes two original prints signed and numbered by Shahn, a full set of all 8 plates, and 30 progressive states for plate 6 in a cloth backed, board portfolio with ties. Prospectus loosely inserted. Fine in box with marbled boards and full green morocco backstrip gilt. A beautiful copy. One of 26 deluxe editions on Arches rag paper lettered A-Z, this being E. Manuscript pages and illuminated chapter headings reproduced by collotype and stencil.

Loose gelatin silver photos c. 11x16,5 cm (4 ½ x 6 ½ in) mounted on card c. 20,5x27 cm (8 ¼ x 10 ½ in). All photos with period pencil or ink captions in French on recto or verso of the mounts; most photos with period ink or pencil numbers on the mounts; two photos dated “1905” on the mounts. Several images mildly faded or with mild silvering, several mounts with minor creases, small tears or chipping on the extremities, but overall a very good collection of interesting and unusual photos. Original large vernacular (not commercial) photos of Egypt taken by a French traveller in the early 20th century. Unlike most collections of Egyptian travel photos from this time, these ones don’t cover ancient temples and sites but instead focus on the life of contemporary Arabic Egypt. First edition. Kafka's second short story collection (after Betrachtung or "Contemplation" in 1912) published in 1919 by Kurt Wolff. The collection consists of 14 short stories in the absurdist/surrealist vein for which Kafka became known — the 15th story "The Bucket Rider" was removed on Kafka's request prior to publication. Due to what can only be described as organizational difficulties within the publishing house, and the lingering effects of the war, the publication of the book stretched out over several years, to the exasperation of an increasingly irate Kafka, if rumours (and surviving correspondence) are to be believed. Unbound, as issued, backstrip; pp. [ii], 14, title with small cut-out portion and a little spotted, otherwise good; provenance: contemporary stamp of Riga Municipal Real-Bürgerschule (i.e. the publishing institution). Extremely rare first edition of this early treatise on taking photos by applying Dauguerre's method, written and given as a public lecture at Riga schools for higher education in the Russian Empire. Deeters opens with a short pre-history of photography from Della Porta to Niepce, touches upon colour theory and the theory of light, before explaining Daguerre's photochemical process in detail, including slightly later improvements of both the chemistry, as well as the cameras, especially achieved by Austrian engineers, scientists and inventors. [Kyiv?, Lithographer of the South Western Railway], 1916. Bifolium (c. 31 x 19.5 cm), pp. [4], i .e. title, lithographic map in colour, colour-lithographic illustration with coat-of arms including printing in gold, and additional hand-colouring, last page blank; very well preserved. The South Western Railway connected Kiev with the Russo-Habsburg border at Gretsan. Eastern Ukraine had been rather stable and under Russian control during the First World War, until 1917. This beautiful and ephemeral publication celebrates the emergency train, a tram with the red cross symbol at the front. The lithograph shows this train approaching military personnel and civilians gathering at the evakuatsionnyi punkt (evacuation point) outside a train station. We were not able to find out what exact event was commemorated with this lavish and beautifully designed ephemeral publication. This railway is currently working flat out. Provenance: Verso neatly inscribed in pencil tarskoe poezd (the Tsar's train).

Unopened and stitched, as issued; pp. 15; light even discolouration to paper-stock, with a little spotting; a very good copy of this early printed elegy on the eminent political thinker. First Edition. Burke was an Irish-born British statesman and philosopher, whose well known work, A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful 'fuelled growing interest in the pictorial and literary appeal of landscape' (ODNB). This text, An Elegy to the Memory of the Right Honourable Edmund Burke was composed by Rev. John Chetwode Eustace, 'a travel writer and Catholic priest born in Ireland. In October 1896 he presented Edmund Burke with a copy of the verses he had composed for the inauguration of Maynooth college. Burke found the piece "full of spirit" (Correspondence, 102). Eustace went on to compose the verse in this elegy text after Burke's death (ODNB). ESTC T65499.

Nineteenth century full brown calf, gilt fillets to sides, spine with raised bands and red morocco gilt lettering piece; pp. 64; 136; 40; Denman lacks title page, hinges tender, previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown, very good. First edition of first part of Fordyce, second edition of second part; second edition of Denman. Scarce. Fordyce (1732-1802) was an eminent Scottish physician and eccentric, who always ate the same single meal everyday at four o'clock - a pound and a half of rump steak, plus half a chicken while it was being prepared. Perhaps unsurprisingly he died of gout. This book was used as a textbook for the lectures he gave at the Royal College of Physicians. Thomas Denman (1733-1815) was a specialist in obstetrics who made inducing premature labour in the case of narrow pelvis standard practice in Britain. Second edition of second part of Fordyce especially scarce, not in BL.

Very rare first edition of this discussion of emigration from Malta to Australia, Canada, the US, France and other European countries. 'The natives of the Maltese Islands are people of pure European race, born within the British Empire, who require no such leavening in order to carry and preserve the traditions of the British Empire, and I submitted to Colonel Smith that physically and morally they are the equals of any of the Northern European people' (p. 16). Great! 'Mr Casolani [1869-1940] was Superintendent of Emigration, in charge of the Department of Emigration until he retired in 1930. During his period in office, more than 30,000 prospective migrants applied and were interviewed by Mr Casolani. First edition. In the original Norwegian. En Folkefiende, or, 'An Enemy of the People,' is a five-act play, first published in 1882 and subsequently first performed in 1883. It concerns the actions of Doctor Thomas Stockmann, a medical officer charged with inspecting the public baths on which the prosperity of his native town depends. He finds the water to be contaminated. When he refuses to be silenced, he is declared an enemy of the people' (Britannica).

A dreamlike post-apocalyse narrative from the American author best known for Little, Big (1981) and his Ægypt series of novels. It was nominated for the 1980 National Book Award for hardcover science fiction, as well as both the British Fantasy and John W. Campbell Awards the same year. Inscribed by the author thus: "For Philip — I'm happy to have been able to sign a copy for so devoted a reader - they are not many, and precious to a writer. John Crowley, October 2000". The recipient is Philip Horowitz, brother of the author Anthony Horowitz, from whence Sotherans aquired this copy.
