"The Story of Mimi-Nashi-Hoichi" was first published in the ATLANTIC MONTHLY, August 1903. It was collected KWAIDAN (1904). A classic tale about Hoichi, a blind musician, or biwa hoshi, who performs for an audience of ghosts. This story was one of four folk tales adapted for KWAIDAN, the 1965 film directed by Masaki Kobayashi. Masakazu Kuwata has illustrated this famous story with a combination of traditional Chinese and Japanese paper-cutting and woodcut-print techniques. The introduction by Donald Keene provides the historic background against which the story is set. Spine panel a bit faded, else a fine copy with wraparound band (chipped on spine and separated at rear fold) in paper slipcase. (#164137)
