Description:
Yale University Press, 1999 4to (31.5 cm), 432 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. "One of the great figures in nineteenth-century English architecture and design, E. W. Godwin (1833-1886) began his career as an architect, later turned to furniture design and decoration, and finally focused on Victorian theater, assuming the roles of costume designer, designer-manager, and critic. In the first section of this book, ten scholars examine Godwin’s multifaceted life and career, discussing his diverse contributions as a design reformer. The second section of the book presents a fully annotated selection of over 150 items that represent the formation and flowering of Godwin’s oeuvre. Beginning with an overview of Godwin’s life, the book then examines the antiquarian and Japanese sources of his styles. Separate chapters discuss his architectural achievements, from early church restorations to the design of avant-garde house/studios; his contributions to design reform through…

Description:
British Library, 2008 8vo (25 cm), 414 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. "Beginning with Bede the Venerable’s account of its remarkable founding by St. Augustine, Canterbury Cathedral has long been thought of as one of the greatest literary centers of the Middle Ages. For the first time, The Earliest Books of Canterbury Cathedral presents the entirety of Canterbury’s pre-thirteenth-century volumes--illustrated in full color--including the Alfredian translation of Gregory the Great’s Dialogues, Lanfranc’s gloss on the Epistles, and an extraordinarily grand copy of Peter Comestor’s Historia scholastica. Each manuscript is accompanied by a clear description and a broad-ranging analysis that not only explains the significance of the work in general, but of the Canterbury copy in particular--benefiting scholars of literary and archival history alike. A substantial introduction on the history of book production in Kent and Canterbury prior to the thirteenth…

Description:
The Pierpont Morgan Library and David R. Godine, 1975 4to (30.5 cm), front., XXX, 265 pp, 225 illustrations. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. "[The book] attempts to show us, by word and by picture, how and where children's literature originated and which kinds of stories were chosen for children -- and by children -- over the centuries. We follow the tales which became popular, see how they were often initially illustrated by crude woodcuts, and how they might later be transformed by the drawings, watercolors, or engravings of great artists. This is not a history of children's literature; it is a selection of masterpieces or milestones from the past two thousand years of books and pictures which either were intended for children or which before long became their special property." (from the Preface by Charles Ryskamp). 225 books described in the catalogue, supplemented by the essay "The first flourishing of children's books" by J. H. Plumb.

Description:
Boston: David R. Godine Publisher, 1990 8vo (21 cm), 218, [4] pp, 21 plates. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (dj little rubbed at extremities and little stained). Edited by & Introduction by Nicholas Barker. Printed for the members of "Hoc Volo". Before his death in 1967, the English typographic historian Stanley Morison had drafted a major work examining the history and development of early Italian writing books. It is not only the last major Morison text, but also one of fundamental importance, covering the most important period (and the most beautiful examples) in the history of calligraphy. The book examines the calligraphy of the sixteenth century from Arrighi to Ugo da Carpi, from Taglienti to Celebrino da Udine. As always with Morison, it is full of surprises, for this was Morison’s particular passion, and in the area of stylistic comparisons and close observation, Morison was an undisputed master.

Description:
Farrand Press & Private Libraries Association, 1990 4to (26 cm), 374 pp. Publisher's cloth, gilt-lettered spine and the front cover (spine sunned, edges little foxed). "This book is about books produced by lithography in Europe in the age of the hand press. The period it covers corresponds roughly with the first half of the nineteenth century, but since the hand press continued to be used for lithography long after this, even on a commercial basis, I have allowed myself some chronological licence. To my knowledge very little of any consequence has been published about such books by those who wrote on lithographic subjects at the time, and nothing at all since then. This book's main aim, therefore, is to introduce a little-known area of book design and production; but I hope that it will also contribute to our understanding of the overall picture of printing and publishing history." (from the Introduction.) A catalogue includes over 400 items.

Description:
Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1979 4to (31 cm), X, 179 pp. Publusher's cloth and dust jacket. This volume contains a photoreproduction of the surviving parts of a manuscript written in Rus' ca. 1100 A.D. The main portion is in the library of the Monastery of St. Catherine at the foot of Mount Sinai, and a fragment is in the Leningrad Public Library. Any manuscript of this age is valuable for the information it provides about the language and culture of early Rus', but the significance of this combined codex is enhanced by the fact that it is the oldest representative of a special revision of the Psalter text which became standard in Rus' but not elsewhere in the world of the Orthodox Slavs. The volume also includes photoreproductions of portions of a mid-twelfth century Psalter from Rus' which is the second-oldest witness to this text.

From the blurb: "In this book Sir George Clark tells the story of European civilization, western and eastern, in the period which followed the middle Ages. Beginning about the time the Turks captured Constantinople, before America was discovered, it ends in the early eighteenth century, when Peter the Great was founding St. Petersburg and Sir Isaac Newton was a very old man, but before anyone foresaw the French Revolution. Touching many aspects of civilization -- economic, social, political, religious and intellectual -- it present the history of the period as a record of endeavor and achievement. In this volume we have selected a range of Franklin's writings, drawing heavily on the proverbs and essays praising prudence, common sense, honesty and good health, which appeared in his 'Poor Richard's Almanac', published from 1732 to 1757. We have also included letters and essays written in the latter part of his life, which reveal the moral and mental depth of the man".

Description:
Oxford University Press, 2009 8vo (22.5 cm), XVI, 251 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. "The Earth After Us takes this novel approach to show how geologists unravel the information in the rocks. As the alien scientists start investigating the strata, what story will they tell of us? What kind of fossils will humans leave behind? What will happen to cities, cars, and plastic cups? How thick a layer will the 'human stratum' be? And will it be obvious which species dominated the planet? It reveals a story of an environmental crisis similar in scale to even earlier mass extinction events, yet puzzlingly different: a crisis where extinctions were accompanied by a bizarre global merry-go-round of organisms and by sharp perturbations of climate. The trail leads finally to the bones of the inhabitants of petrified cities that have lain deep underground for many millions of years. As thought-provoking as it is engaging, this book simultaneously explains both the geological mechanisms that…
