First perfomed in Jan. 1750 with Garrick in the part of Edward and Barry as French nobleman Lord Ribemont. Shirley quarrelled with Garrick, and wrote Brief Remarks on the original and present State of the Drama' with a humorous dialogue called Hecate's Prophecy' in which Garrick was mocked under the name of Roscius. William Shirley (1739-1780) was primarily a merchant, heavily involved in business ventures in Portugal., and was considered somewhat of an authority on international trade and commerce.

Some age toning, foxing to both volumes, but text is unmarked. Haeckel [1834-1919] is best remembered today for his popularizing of Darwin and his book Art forms in Nature [Kunstformen der Natur].
