Description:
Cincinnati: Truman & Spofford. Soft cover. Collectible; VG. 16mo, stitched pamphlet, 24 pages, illustrated cover, title page and full-page engravings. Condition: VERY GOOD with some light soiling to paper covers and edges, a tiny blue ink stain in lower margin that stains through several pages - does not affect the text which is clean throughout. The illustrations are charming. This title was first published by William Truman in 1844; after his death his wife merged the firm to become Truman & Spofford; these Truman & Spofford Toy Books were published between 1849 and 1858, so this title, having no date nor William Truman's name would have been published sometime in that time frame. Description:
Gloucester, MA: Peter Smith, 1972. Reprint Edition . Hardcover. VG+. Reprint edition, first published in The Anchor Books edition in 1963. 8vo, salmon cloth, 339 pages. VERY GOOD+ / no jacket: light rubbing to corners, spine lightly sunned, otherwise appears unread. These stories, selected by Randall Jarrell with an introduction, include 14 of the short works that Kipling, most noted for his works set in India, wrote about the English in England. Included is his famous story "The Janeites" about a group of war-weary men who come to admire the works of Jane Austen... indeed it is this story that gave the real Janeites their name (though it was George Sainstbury who first coined the term, though he spelled it "Janites").
