  • Quantity available: 1
Wolfeboro, New Hampshire: Bowers and Merena Galleries, 1988. Paperbound . BINDING/CONDITION: paperback; Very Good condition. Foreword by Eric P Newman. Taken from the author's note: ''The author first learned of Pierre Eugene Du Simitiere in 1982, while conducting research for his doctoral dissertation on the early history of American museums. Du Simitiere's role as a founding father of numismatics in this country has been virtually forgotten. The following pages tell the story of Du Simitiere, as much as possible, in his own words. His life was replete with ironies. The saddest irony is that he died a pauper, was buried in an unmarked grave, yet fathered an avocation whose very name today is synonymous with wealth. This little book does not pretend to fully explain the enigma that was Pierre Eugene Du Simitiere. It does however, shed light on his numismatic achievements.'' 8vo (8.5 inches tall) 75 pages. Appendix, notes, index.

Santa Barbara, California: Santa Barbara Heritage, 1987. Paperbound . 3rd Edition, Enlarged. BINDING/CONDITION: paperbound; Good+ condition. The panoramic cover scene is from a painting by Alexander Francis Harmer, an artist who settled in the Santa Barbara area in the early 1890s. This was originally published in 1910. When the author died suddenly in 1920, his widow, in response to many requests, had a second edition published. The following is paraphrased from the foreword by John C Woodward: ''Hawley's book has long been considered a concise and accurate history of Santa Barbara covering the period before the coming of the Americans. While sentimental and written in a turn of the century style, it is these very qualities which make it so pleasurable s well as informative. In this third, enlarged edition, the text is reproduced unchanged from the first edition; however the number of illustrations has been increased from the original 12 to a total of 62. All of the three photographs, two etchings, three dra ... Read more

Following is taken from the publisher's blurb: ''An astonishing, visionary reading of the story of Eden. This unfurls the history of the relationship of the human and the natural, Eisenberg explores the ways in which nature has been remade, from the biological waves of change before man's arrival, to the mythos, stories, architecture and scientific discoveries we have used to make sense of our baffled position on the edge. He shows how the contradictions of this relationship define the central controversy of ecology today: the conflict between the Planet Fetishers, who dream of returning to Eden, restoring a state of harmony in which wilderness reclaims the Earth, and the Planet Managers, who dream of a man-made paradise, one that presumes a harmony between the best interests of wise humans and their planet.'' 8vo (abou ...
