Eastnor Castle. Edited by..

(SOMERSET, Lady Isabella Caroline)

  • Quantity available: 1
Frontis. woodcut of the castle, printed in red and numerous illus. in the text (some full-page). 66 pp., one unnumbered leaf. Oblong 4to, orig. red cloth-backed printed boards (extremities a little rubbed & soiled, hinges tender). [London: J.W. Benn & Bros.], n.d. [but 1889]. An uncommon and beautifully illustrated catalogue. Lady Somerset (1851-1921), the third daughter of Charles Somers Somers-Cocks, Viscount Eastnor, had married Lord Henry Richard Charles Somerset (1849-1932), but the marriage ended when she discovered his homosexual proclivities. Rather than officially divorce, which was against church doctrine, she opted for a separation and won custody of their son in 1878. She retreated to her family home and soon became a principal figure of the temperance movement. Gwenllian Elizabeth Fanny Morgan (1852-1939), an antiquary who would go on to be the first woman to be elected as a mayor in Wales, assisted Lady Somerset in the compilation this catalogue. 20 double-page & six full-page woodcut illus. 34; 21; 15; 17 folding leaves. Four vols. 8vo, orig. blue patterned wrappers, orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers, new stitching. Edo: Suharaya Ihachi, 1837. Second edition, enlarged. The first edition, which appeared in 1827, had only three volumes. This work was illustrated by Settan Hasegawa (1778-1843), a prominent illustrator who specialized in meisho-ki, a genre of guidebooks to famous places. This work beautifully depicts the residents of Edo at leisure, relishing the changing seasons. Many of the places shown are still popular areas for relaxation. The four volumes are divided by season, recommending the best places to visit through the years to see the best displays of flowers and wildlife. Fine set. Many of the woodcuts in the first three volumes seem weakly printed. ❧ Brown, Block Printing & Book Illustration in Japan, p. 68-Hasegawa "was a well-known illustrator of meisho-ki." Hillier, Th ... Title within elaborate calligraphic woodcut border (title a little soiled & frayed around edges). 242 leaves (the last a blank). Small folio, cont. blind-stamped panelled pigskin over wooden boards (binding somewhat soiled, pigskin at one corner worn away), remains of clasps & catches. Hamburg: A. Lichtenstein, 1682. First edition, extremely rare, of this large and comprehensive Hamburg manual of accounting techniques. Only two other copies seem to be extant: one at the British Library and the other Tübingen. The book was a success and a second edition was published in 1714 under the title Der Werth-geschätzte Handels-Mann. Joachim Rademann was a chartered accountant at Hamburg. At the end of this, his first published work, he describes himself a "young man" and, according to Schröder, he married in 1683; otherwise, nothing seems to be known of his life. 36 pp. Small 8vo, modern boards. Berlin: "Im Verlag der Kōnigl. Preuss. akadem. Kunst- und Buchhandlung," 1789. First separate edition, originally published in the same year in the Berlinischen Journal für Aufklärung. This work was written in response to the newly enacted censorship edict, in which King Friedrich Wilhelm II ordered that all publications and other forms of printed material - including illustrations - be submitted to Prussian state censors for approval. Any critical statements of a political or religious nature were officially discouraged. These restrictions remained in force until the 1840s, with the accession of Friedrich Wilhelm IV to the throne. In this work, Unger (1753-1804), the leading Berlin printer and publisher, protests the new law. Fine copy. 20 unnumbered leaves. 8vo, attractive antique panelled calf (title & a few leaves with minor & careful strengthenings, minor worming). Cologne: Heirs of H. Quentel, 1501. First edition of one of the earliest arithmetics; this is an extremely rare book on the market. "This is the earliest treatise on algorism printed at Cologne. It is divided into four 'tractati,' and includes the fundamental operations through evolution; a brief treatment of abacus or line reckoning; common fractions; rule of three, partnership, and over twenty miscellaneous rules...In the algoristic treatment of integers Huswirth places 'duplatio' (doubling) after multiplication, and 'mediatio' (halving) after division; but when he is dealing with counters and with fractions he places them before multiplication, because they are needed there in abacus calculating. 4 p.l., 100 pp. 8vo, attractive antique calf-backed marbled boards, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. London: W. Richardson, 1787. First edition and quite scarce. Rev. Howlett (1731-1804), economist and writer on the poor, took his BA at St John's College, Oxford. Most of his writings concentrated on the well-being of the poor, an issue for which he was well equipped as an able statistician and demographer. It was widely felt in the 18th century that England and Wales were experiencing depopulation. Howlett argued the opposite: that the population of these two countries "had doubled since 1688 and was expanding at a quickening pace to the benefit of the rural poor. One of the principal factors was the changing pattern of land usage, especially through the intensification of commercial agriculture, enclosures, the progressive loss of common rights, and the engrossing of small farms. Howlett believed that resistance to change was motivated by sentiment and irrational argum ... Read more

Title within woodcut border & woodcut on verso of final leaf. 54, [2] pp. Small 4to, modern binding reusing an early MS. leaf over boards (verso of final leaf a little soiled). [Basel: J. Froben, 1518]. First separate edition of these two famous texts, "In Praise of Marriage" and "In Praise of Medicine." The first work created a cause célèbre; written many years earlier in honor of the marriage of his friend Lord Mountjoy, when finally published it was seen by the Louvain and Paris theologians as an implicit condemnation of clerical celibacy. The second work is Erasmus's expression of his views of the medical arts. It "presents a view of medical ethics that identifies competence, beneficence and diligence as the physician's primary moral obligations. The activity of the physician, when directed toward the patient in accordance with these obligations, gives rise to reciprocal obligations on the part of the patient: gratitude and reward.
