Boston: the Merrymount Press for the Limited Editions Club, 1942. One of 1500 copies designed by D. B. Updike and signed by Chamberlain. With 12 etchings by Samuel Chamberlain. 8vo, publisher's original red buckram, lettered and decorated in gilt on spine. xvii, 469 pp. A very fine copy, previous owner bookplate to the free-fly. A VERY FINE COPY OF AN IMPORTANT BOOK. Now an American classic, this was originally printed in 1907 in a limited edition for circulation among interested parties. Adams intended the work as a study of multiplicity in the twentieth century and planned it as a sequel to his MONT-SAINT-MICHEL AND CHARTRES, which was a study of the unity of the thirteenth century. The later chapters embody Adams' dynamic theory of history. The exact number of copies of the 1907 edition are not know, but BAL suggests a few more than 40 and Merle Johnson asserts only 100 were done. This edition was published posthumously.

A FINE COPY OF THIS ELUSIVE BOOK. Darwin considered this book to "form a complement to that on the Fertilisation of Orchids". The LIFE AND LETTERS of Darwin (III, p. 274) quotes Asa Gray as saying that "if the Orchid-book (with a few trifling omissions) had appeared before the 'Origin' the author would have been canonised rather than anathematised by the natural theologians," and noted that a review in the 'Literary Churchman' found only one fault "that Mr. Darwin's expression of admiration at the contrivances in orchids is too indirect a way of saying, 'O Lord, how manifold are Thy works.'"
