Father Macmillan, in his preface, speaks of the difficulties he met due to the lack of early records. This makes his book more important, as his primary sources are no longer alive. The binding is tight and strong, but the last 2 sections were misbound, and the edges are discolored. The red covers are near fine. Dustjacket stained on spine and flap edges, with price intact.

This collection includes the complete text of four scarce early histories of Belfast. White's 'A History of Belfast with Introductory Remarks on Acadia' appeared in 1827, and was the first book published in the town of Belfast. Three of the histories were published in serial form in Belfast newspapers: Locke's 'Sketches of the Early History of Belfast' was serialized in The Progressive Age beginning in April 1856. 'History of Belfast From its First Settlement to 1825' by Herman Abbot was published in 1900 by The Republican Journal. Crosby's 'Annals of Belfast for Half a Century' was published by The Republican Journal in 1874-75. Cream cloth, title gilt. Very Good+.

The wrappers are well preserved, and the back tear was probably caused by stress created when the map pocket was pasted in too close to the spine edge.
