Collection of fables by Fontaine, accompanied by black and white illustrations. La Fontaine is considered one of the key fabulists, and one of the most influential early French writers, who served not only to inspire and shape French literature, but also fabulists of other countries as well. VERY GOOD books in GOOD slipcases. Minor toning and a hint of soiling to the wrappers. Volume 1 with a scuff mark to its front cover. Many pages unopened throughout each volume. Heavy fading to the slipcases, with some fraying and splitting along the extremities, including a notable split to the lower hinge (near opening) of volume 1.

New York: Madison Square Theatre, Publisher, 1881. Wraps. Good. no date, 1881. Printed wraps. Small booklet. 31 pp. Line drawing illustrations by James E. Kelly. A promotional work presumably issued by the Madison Square Theatre, touting both the success of the play Hazel Kirke (this issued around its 400th showing) and the theater amenities, including pumped in cool air. Pages 7 to 25 are drawings, with short accompanying text, of the performance of the play. Hazel Kirke was a play written by actor and playwright Steele MacKaye. He wrote it expressly for the Madison Square Theatre, a theater which he helped remodel, implementing technology such as the double stage. The theater was demolished in 1908. GOOD condition. Moderate to heavy uneven browning to the covers. Minor soiling and staining to the covers.

Also included is a look at the progress of the abolitionists, and the efforts by the government to 'nationalize' the institution of slavery. Published and edited by Gamaliel Bailey a journalist, publisher and ardent abolitionist. GOOD+ condition. Minor toning and very light soiling to the piece.
