Description:
London: Putnam, 1974. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. Hardback, bound in the original blue cloth. 22 × 14cm, 450pp. Signed directly to the title page by H A Taylor. For four decades Fairey was one of the great names in British aviation and, although the organization no longer builds aircraft of its own design, the name continues in aeronautical spheres. During that long period from the 1914-18 war until well after the Second World War, Fairey's name was always associated with British naval aircraft - there was the long series of Fairey IIIs which served the Royal Naval Air Service and the Fleet Air Arm and which in its final form saw widescale service with the RAF before being developed into the Gordon and the Seal. The book contains a number of photographs and diagrams of the aircraft depicting their layout from different views, and there is also a complete listing of aircraft by constructor's numbers. Hardback in dustwrapper. 19.5 × 13.5cm, 310pp. The Fall of Valor was arguably the first major American novel to deal openly with the theme of homosexuality. The novel is an unflinching portrayal of a marriage that has faded to a mere duty. John and Ethel Grandin take a summer vacation to Nantucket with the hope of recapturing the happiness they felt in the early days of their relationship. But instead the holiday blasts their marriage wider apart than ever when John falls hopelessly in love with a handsome marine captain. Condition: The book itself is in very good condition, with occasional and light spotted foxing but in strong readable condition. The dustwrapper is faded to the spine and edgeworn but has not been price-clipped and is now within a protective sleeve.

Madison: University of Wisconsin Press, 1984. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/Good. First edition. Hardback in dustwrapper. 22 × 14.5cm, 232pp. Signed and dedicated by Kevin O'Neill to the ffep. This study of rural Ireland in the years leading up to the "Great Hunger" of the 1840s explicates the social, economic and demographic conditions of the era. The author argues that overpopulation and deprivation were inextricably linked to a third variable - the rapid economic development of rural Ireland that was shaped by British interests. In documenting his view of a rapidly changing pre-famine Ireland, the author focuses on the parish of Killashandra, in County Cavan, during the years 1780 to 1845. Employing a variety of sources, including local statistics, contemporary eyewitness accounts, and manuscript census reports, he is able to record the decisive stages of rural Ireland's transformation. William Robinson (1838-1935) was a gardener and journalist hose ideas about wild gardening spurred the movement that led to the popularising of the English cottage garden, a parallel to the search for honest simplicity and vernacular style of the British Arts and Crafts movement. He purchased the Elizbethan Gravetye Manor in Sussex in 1884 where he created a garden, putting many of his ideas into practice. His books included The Wild Garden and The English Flower Garden, the latter being the bestselling gardening book ever printed. A non-fiction title by the author of King Solomon's Mines and She. Dublin: Arlen House, 2018. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. First edition. Paperback. 21.5 × 14cm, 128pp. Initialled, dated and dedicated by Stephen James Smith to the title page. Poet Stephen James Smith's sympathies lie with the addicted and the convicted, often responding to what he finds on life's margins. His sharp-edged forceful language derives from his gifts as a performance poet and his fearlessness in looking into the eye of his subject matter. His poems get their charge, as well as their shape and substance, from his use of demotic rhythms, the vividness of his vernacular and his emotional directness. London: Macmillan, 1976. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/Good. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 22 × 14.5cm, × + 186pp. Signed and dedicated by J M Craster to historian, author and anthologist Ann Powell. To many, the First World War conjures up exclusively a picture of trench warfare, in which the armies of both sides remained locked in the mud and despair of their static positions. The war of movement with which the conflict opened and closed is less well remembered. This book, originally published in 1976, is an attempt to correct that situation, by providing a detailed daily account of the actions of one of the finest of the battalions of the original British Expeditionary Force that crossed over to France in the summer of 1914, the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards - The Models. The story is told in the words of the officers of the Battalion, few of whom survived the war, taken from their diaries and letters, and covers all the major actions of the first five months… Read More

Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2007. Soft cover. Very Good. Reprint. Paperback. 21.5 × 14cm, 224pp. Signed and dedicated by Hew Strachan to the half-title page, "For Anne, with best wishes, Hew Strachan". Anne is Anne Powell, historian, anthologist and author on the First and Second World Wars. The First World War was not just fought in the trenches of the western front. It embraced all of Africa. Many of those who fought this white man's war were black. The dangers they confronted went beyond those of the battlefield. They fell prey to malaria and dysentery, and they were attacked by lions and crocodiles. But it was a vast and spectacular theatre of operations, in which great personalities - thrusting German officers like Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck, or big-game hunters like Peter Pretorious - could impose themselves. Embracing the perspectives of all the nations who fought there, this is the first ever full account of the Great War in Africa. Condition: This copy is in excellent… Read More

London: Lawrence and Wishart, 1967. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 21 × 14cm, 433pp. A seminal work by one of the most influential figures of the English folk revival of the 1950s, Folk Song in England (1967) is an expansive account of the development of English traditional song, from the very oldest, ritual verse, through epic balladry, to the development of lyrical song in the industrial era. In a unique and ambitious approach, Lloyd marries the tradition of folk-song scholarship, largely derived from Cecil Sharp, with the radical historiography of E. P. Thompson, and in so doing produces a work of exceptional insight. In particular, his defining of 'industrial folk song' reveals traditional verse as an ebullient, living expression of the working people, perfectly adaptable to reflect their ways and conditions of life.
