Description:
London: Century, 1996. First edition. Hardback. Fine/Fine. Both book and dust jacket are in near fine condition with hardly any sign of use. A very slight degree of tanning to the pages. There wouldn't be any trouble if only you had a wife," Lady Boynton had said. To a mild-mannered Gervaise this was a new idea and the longer he thought about it, the more delightful it seemed...But Flavia Cameron was not what Lady Boynton had in mind. Perceptive and poignant, funny and touching, Facing The Music is a welcome new novel from the author of A Price For Everything.

Description:
Melbourne: Ramsay, 1926. De-luxe edition limited to 1,000 numbered copies - this being no 915. Folio. [11], 166pp. List of subscribers at end. Pale blue cloth lettered and decorated in yellow. No jacket. This is one of the copies Muir describes as 'unsigned and bound in a cheaper binding with col. instead of gilt lettering &c, suggesting that they may have bound up later and sold as remainders'. Top edge not gilt and no tissue guards to the illustrations. In the chronological biography of Ida Rentoul Outhwaite compiled by Michael Organ it is speculated that only 600 true de-luxe editions were bound and signed and that this was possibly due to lower than expected sales and led to a further 400 copies being bound more cheaply in pale blue covers and without the tissue guards. Altogether a fabulous book. 51 hand-tipped plates of which 19 (including the fronitspiece) are coloured. Black & white vignette and numerous text illustrations, pictorial endpapers. London: Jonatahn Cape and The Book Society, 1954. This edition issued on first publication by The Book Society in association with Jonathan Cape, 1954. Hardback. 257pp. Red cloth with black design to upper board and black with gilt to spine. Top edge tinted red. Dustjacket. This story is essentially a contest - moral, not physical - between the talented but irresponsible Sultan of Namua, and Morland, a Government official whose high principles rest on egotism. The background is a romantic principality in a Pacific island during a savage insurrection. The novel offers a comedy of many shades - with irony predominating - in a landscape of many colours. Book in very good condition. Book Society ex libris plate to front paste down. Light bumping to corners. Very faint toning to endpapers. Dust jacket good. Unclipped. Generally rubbed and soiled. Spine discoloured. Corners chipped and reinforced with tape to rear surface.

Dust jacket condition: very good, unclipped and with just a little shelf wear around the edges and the occasional light mark. People often remarked that Rhodri MacNeal resembled his hawks, with his keen gold-brown eyes and his narrow, high-bridged nose. As a fighter pilot in Vietnam he'd experienced the hardest sort of flying a man could do...but it wasn't until he found the falcons that he knew what flight was all about. And it wasn't until he met India Blake that he knew what true pasion was.

Maidenhead: Thames Valley Press, 1971. First printed in 1855 with a second edition in 1873, this facsimile edition published in 1971. vi, 147pp. Hardback. Green cloth boards with gilt to spine. Top edge gilt. Dust jacket. Salvin & Brodrick's Falconry in the British Isles is claimed by Harting in his Bibiotheca Accipiraria as "the best modern book in English on the art and practice of falconry". Both authors were falconers of experience. One interesting aspect of their book is their enlightened attitude towards conservation. Like all old books on falconry allowances must be made by the reader for the somewhat out of date methods sometimes employed. Like most things, changes and improvements have been made and a beginner in falconry should bear this in mind. Nevertheless the book not only contains much of interest but also some extremely worthwhile advice. 24 colour plates Book condition very good. Minor wear only. Slight bumping to corners. very clean internally. Dust jacket very… Read More

London: Harper Collins, 2016. First edition, 2016. xi, 594pp. Hardback. Dust jacket in a protective sleeve. Falcons have been a source of inspiration to writers, artists, historians and naturalists alike, captivating our imagination throughout the ages. In a much anticipated volume on Britain's most fascinating group of birds, Richard Sale draws on a wealth of experience and research, providing a comprehensive natural of the four British breeding falcons - the Peregrine, Kestrel, Hobby and Merlin. The book takes each species in turn, exploring its form, habitat, breeding biology and status, along with a chapter on the hunting techniques of each species. The author addresses the current population concerns for three of the four species, providing an overview of recent conservation efforts and the devastating effects of climate change and an increasing human population. Profusely illustrated with colour photographs and diagrams etc. Front cover illustration by Robert Gillmor. Book in fine… Read More

London: Chatto & Windus, 2000. First edition. Hardback. Fine/Fine. Both the book and its dust jacket are in near fine condition. The book looks unread and the jacket has just a very small amount of shelf wear mostly around the head and tail of the spine. When William Hazlitt published his "book of love" in 1823, scandal rocked the literary world. He had chosen as the object of his grand Romantic passion a mere serving maid – and she had disillusioned him by proving just as tawdry as all the rest. Anne Haverty in this magnificent work of imaginative empathy, rescues Sarah Walker, the victim of Hazlitt's unfortunate obsession from silence and obscurity, letting her tell her side of the story.

Description:
London: Collins, 1981. First edition 1981. Hardback. 178pp. Dust jacket in a protective sleeve. Farming and wildlife affect each other in many, often subtle, ways. many developments in farming practice have been harmful to wild plants and animals. As the land is made to yield more, so rare species become rarer or even extinct, and even more common ones are beginning to be absent from large parts of the country. This provocative book argues that wild species are actually beneficial to the land as a whole - without them its productivity will fall and farming will ultimately suffer. The main changes in farming practice and their environmental effects are dealt with systematically. The book also discusses arable cropping, grassland management, animal husbandry, hedgerow removal, land drainage and pesticide use. Also considered are the care of the soil and its inhabitants, possible damage to livestock by diseases of wild animals and the effects of hunting and shooting. Prof. Mellanby writes with an… Read More
