Description:
London: Gul. Sandby, 1749. 2 vols., 8vo. Title-pages in red and black (both with large engraved portrait of the Horace), [x], 166; [2], 167-353 pp. With engraved dedication to George, Prince of Wales (later George III), and 35 full-page engraved plates (including frontispiece). Contemporary French red morocco, triple gilt rule around sides, small flower ornament at the corners, smooth spine gilt with seven compartments, olive morocco lettering pieces, comb-marbled endpapers, all edges gilt (corners a bit bumped and with some wear; small circular booklabel removed from front pastedown of both volumes; text at front and back a little browned). Overall in very good condition. Sandby's very handsome edition of Horace, illustrated with 35 engraved plates. Uncommon in contemporary French red morocco, as here. Our copy appears to have been printed on thick paper. The bindings are indeed French: the watermark on the final blank of vol. 2 is "raisin" dated "17[?]" type of Gaudriault 956. That Sandby's Horace… Read more

Description:
Fargo, North Dakota: Fargo Union Mission, 1940. Very good. Unbound tract (ca. 5.5" x 4"). 3 pp. Light toning. Preserved in a mylar sleeve. A LURID WARNING OF THE WAGES OF SIN FOR A LIBERATED "MODERN" WOMAN FOLLOWING THE REPEAL OF PROHIBITION IN 1933. Scarce: no other copy has been located. The dread specter of the flapper girl appears seems to have reached Fargo sometime in the 1930s. The protagonist of the present tracts states: "From other folk whom I thought to be my friends I caught the 'Repeal Fever.' I bobbed my hair, rolled down my stockings, cut off my skirts, penciled my eyebrows, painted my lips and stained my fingernails." The consequences of "Repeal Fever" are (of course) drunkenness and early death. Interestingly the protagonist names one of the earliest catalysts for her downfall: cigarette ads on the radio, in magazines, and on billboards. From there she started "sitting in public places." She lost the desire to go to church or congregate with parishioners; instead she favored dance… Read more

New York: Grolier Club, 1968. First Edition. Very good. Small 4to. xiii, 62, [6] pp. With 8 pages of plates. Original cloth, spine gilt. Ink ownership inscription on first blank leaf. NOT ex-library! The astounding collection of the earliest English printers formed by Paul Mellon can never be rivaled today. As we read from the preface: "The fifty-five works represented here are the very heart and soul of a new phase of English language and literature." Included are fifteen publications by William Caxton (not only in Westminster but Bruges), his successor Wynkyn de Worde, the Eponymous Printer of Oxford, Theodoricus Rood of Oxford, Richard Pynson, the so-called "Schoolmaster Printer," Julian Notary, John Lettou, William de Machlinia, and Robert Copland. There are detailed collations, copy-specific information such as binding and imperfects (ubiquitous among the earliest English printed books) and provenance.

Description:
Lyon? (or Paris), 1570. The coffret measures (in mm) ca. 280 (long) x 190 (wide) x 115 (high): around sides are four looped metal fittings for leather straps, all five original hinges on back, on front the original iron hasp facade with forged "pine leaf" decoration, keyhole & lock mechanism; on slightly dome top nine iron reinforcements, the whole fixed with original nails; original linen lined interior. This artifact has many serious condition problems: the left side of the lid is present but detached; many areas of the wood are chipped, wormed, and/or defective, but there are no signs of restoration whatsoever. Affixed to the inside of the lid is a large woodcut (ca. 250 x 170 mm) of two lovers (see below). The woodcut is torn, chipped and damaged, with evidence of old insect activity; there is loss of considerable portions of text and image, including the left portion of the man, the banderole above him, and the dog at his feet. With many significant faults, and priced accordingly. An important… Read more
