Description:
London, John van Voorst, 1855. 4to (27.5 x 18.0 cm). vii, 147 pp.; 24 chromolithographed plates (XI and XIII acting as frontispieces) with fine hand-colouring. Early 20th-century dark green half morocco over linen boards. Spine with five raised bands; compartments with gilt ornithological vignettes and title. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. Original embossed limp cloth boards with large gilt vignette and gilt on the front board, bound in the rear. = First edition. According to Schwerdt, this is "...the best English book on falconry and a very attractive publication". The fine plates were drawn and engraved by the second author, William Brodrick of Chudleigh (1814-1888). Francis Henry Salvin (1817-1904) was a writer on falconry and hawking. "Salvin was also the first to revive successfully in England the old sport of fishing with cormorants." (Wikipedia). Plates XXII-XXIV (last) show equipment used in falconry - all others show falcons and hawks. Provenance: with armorial… Read More

Description:
Vimariae [Weimar], Landes-Industrie Comptoir, 1846-1847. Five parts in four. 8vo (21.7 x 13.5 cm). Drophead title and four title pages, 999 pp. [23; xii, 152; x, 222; ix, 250; vii, 314]. Original, uniform printed wrappers. = Rarely seen publications, of taxonomical importance, by the German botanist Max Joseph Roemer (1791-1849). Preceding the first part is the prospect, which is listed by Stafleu and Cowan as a separate publication. The last part, on Ensatae, is stated to be Pars prima, but a second part was never published. Perhaps Roemer was already in poor health by then. From the collection of Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck, with their small label "Schloss Dyck" on the spines, but otherwise unmarked. Uncut. Wrappers chipped at most spine ends, one binding weak; first part bumped and creased at lower outer corner, otherwise very good. Pritzel, 7718; Stafleu and Cowan, 9413-9414.

Description:
Stuttgart, G. Siegle, ca. 1929. Oblong folio (25.0 x 35.0 cm). 30 plates, numbered 1-30, each with one to three interior designs printed in colour, including silver and gilt. = An apparently complete suite of colourful interior design illustrations, probably from the 1920's. Although made following the highest standard of printing, the work is not signed (not even monogrammed) anywhere, except - perhaps - for an indiscernible signature on plate 17. The illustrations are reminiscent of Rudolf Zenker's Farbiger Decken- und Wandschmuck im Geiste Fruhgermanischer Kunst; E. Reinhardt's Prakrische Vorlagenwerk für Dekorationsmaler (Scheider-Henn, 440) and the "Sammelwerk" Farbige Raumkunst (Schneider-Henn, 487). Slight fraying to the lower right corner of the first plate, one very short tear (< 2 mm) in the top margin of plate 30; a few small, weak marginal spots; otherwise in very good condition. No toning; the colouring bright and bold. We found no other copies. Not in… Read More

Introduccion (Entrego segunda, 1867) pp. 87-120; Lista de los mamiferos fosiles del terreno diluviano (Entrego tercera, 1866) pp. 121-232, plates V-VIII; ([continued in:] Entrega cuarta, 1867) pp. 233-300, plates IX-XIV, for a total of 214 pp., and ten lithographed plates. Original uniform printed wrappers. = A series of very rare papers intended to become Karl Burmeister's magnum opus, which, however, was never completed. Karl (or Carl) Hermann Konrad Burmeister (1807-1892) was a German - later Argentine - zoologist, herpetologist, mammalogist and entomologist. "He traveled to Brazil from 1850 to 1852 and Argentina from 1857 to 1860, returning to Germany with zoological collections. In 1861 he went to live in Argentina, founding the Institute at the Museo Nacional in Buenos Aires" (Wikipedia). Published in the museum's Anales, first volume, parts 2-4. Spine with four raised, gilt-lined bands and gilt title. = Second, much enlarged edition of a massive work on the beetle fauna of Austria and the neigbouring countries once belonging to the Austrian empire. Written by the Austrian entomologist Ludwig Redtenbacher (1814-1876), and also translated into Russian. Provenance: with in the lower margin of the title page the oval stamp of Albrecht Blumenzweig (1840-1903), writer for a German-speaking Moravian newspaper who lived in Olomouc (Czechia). Description:
Nürnberg, C. H. Zeh, [1830]-1832. 8vo (21.9 x 14.0 cm). xxviii pp., 60 hand-coloured plates with explanatory text leaves. Contemporary blind boards. Spine with paper label with the title hand-written in an old hand. = The rare complete mammal-section of a rare series on the fauna of Bavaria in southern Germany. The plates are larger than the text pages, as intended. In bound copies, these plates are usually folded, but in this copy they are not folded, with the widest possible margins. Included are both the wild animals, for instance, several bats, and the domestic animals with, e.g., several dog breeds. This work should not be confused with neither the similarly titled later (1854) work by Gemminger and Fahrer, which only has 24 plates, nor by the earlier work by Paula von Schrank (1798-1803). Some scattered spotting, mainly to the text leaves, and thumbing in the margins, but otherwise clean. A very good copy. Nissen ZBI, 3356; Wood, p. 533.
