Haller & Widow of Vandenhök, 1774. First edition, and a very fine copy, printed on superior paper. In his old age, Haller turned to fiction and wrote three philosophical romances - Usong (1771), Alfred (1773), and Fabius und Cato (1774) - in which he drew upon his political experience and expounded his ideas of government. In Fabius und Cato, Haller describes the system of government of the Roman Republic. A utopian novel in which Haller makes clear the merits of a limited monarchy. A very fine copy.

London: L. Booth, 1870. First edition of this scarce and peculiar work celebrating the Monserrate estate of Cook (1817-1901), a merchant and famous art collector. The authors are believed to be Thomas Purnell (1834-89), and John Cargile. In rhyming verse, they describe Monserrate, Pena Palace, Mafra, and Lisbon, casting Cook in the role of Oberon. "In 1856 [Cook] bought the palace of Monserrate at Cintra, a place redolent with romantic associations. He had the building completely restored and embarked on the development of its magnificent gardens. He gradually acquired vast areas of land near Cintra and renewed the prosperity of the district. In recognition of his services to the area and his benevolence to the poor, in 1864 Cook was created Visconde de Monserrate ... Read more

Frontis. & 19 photographic plates. 47 pp. Large 4to, orig. blue cloth (extremities rubbed), upper cover lettered in gilt. [London: Privately Printed at the Chiswick Press, c. 1937]. This copy belonged to Benedict Nicolson (1914-78), a prominent art historian. Locker-Lampson (1875-1946), an MP and author, formed a highly selective collection of Italian paintings. They include Pietro Longhi's Visit to a Library, Vivarini's St. Jerome (National Gallery of Art, Washington), and Bacchiacca's Eve with Cain and Abel (Metropolitan Museum of Art). The works were eventually dispersed in 1938. It is likely that this catalogue was prepared as a record of the collection before its contents were auctioned off. Very good copy. Stamp of "Tomas Harris Ltd. 6, Chesterfield Gardens, Curzon Street, London W.1.".

Contemporary journals praised the festive character of the event. The inauguration speech was given by Hirsch Aub who became rabbi of the new synagogue through more than four decades. Japan: late Edo. Until the late 17th century, the Chinese had been permitted to move in Japan quite freely for trading purposes. But in 1689, due to the rise of smuggling activities, the Chinese were restricted, like the Dutch, to a compound on the eastern tip of Nagasaki - called the "Tojin yashiki" ("Chinamen's mansions") - surrounded by a moat and walls with gates which could be locked from the outside. Inside were housed on average 2000 Chinese merchants and sailors, along with interpreters, inspectors, and staff. This scroll depicts two large Chinese ships just off Nagasaki surrounded by a number of smaller transport and supply ships. It is clear that these smaller ships are Japanese based on the clothes the crewmen are wearing. The numerous Japanese government officials are dressed in black robes; they are inspecting the arriving goods (sugar, raw silk, and finished fabrics) along with antiques. The final section of the scroll depicts a portion of Tojin yashiki. We s ... Read more

62 pages (all of the drawings are pasted onto the blank leaves of the album). 8vo (275 x 207 mm.), orig. patterned boards (rubbed), stitched as issued. [Japan: late Edo]. Morning glories, first brought into Japan by the Chinese, were originally used for medicinal purposes as a laxative. But soon the Japanese cultivated them as ornamental flowers. During the Edo period, morning glories became very popular and the subject of aesthetic admiration. Much like "tulip mania" in 17th-century Holland, Japan experienced several morning glory booms in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Japanese horticulturalists have been the leaders in cross-breeding the flowers to develop new varieties. The anonymous artist who executed the highly accomplished drawings in this album has depicted many varieties of the morning glory flower in great detail. There are some black-and-white outline brush sketches of the flowers, but the vast majority are painted in rich colors. The artist has labelled each flower wi ... Read more

Eight folding engraved plates & one folding printed table. Three vols. 8vo, cont. mottled calf (careful repairs to joints, head-caps, & corners), triple gilt fillet round sides, spines nicely gilt, red & green morocco lettering pieces on spines. Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1778. First edition of the author's first important book; it was one of the first French works to include the Linnaean nomenclature as well as that of Tournefort. Lamarck's innovation in this book was "the establishment of dichotomous keys to aid in the identification of French plants; by eliminating large groups of plants at each stage through the use of mutually exclusive characteristics, the given name of any plant could be rapidly determined. This 'method of analysis,' as Lamarck called it, was much easier to use in identifying plants than Linnaeus' artificial system of classification, which was based on sexual differences among plants or the natural methods of classification then developing i ...
