(Although Berrigan signed this copy, it was not actually one of the 25 signed and numbered copies.) With a hand-colored cover (as issued) by Rochelle Kraut. An attractive collection of poems by one of the key members of the New York School. This book was published by Frontward Books, which was started by Bob Rosenthal and Rochelle Kraut. According to Rosenthal, Berrigan taught him how to use a mimeograph machine when Berrigan was teaching at Northwestern and Rosenthal was attending his classes. The play opened in New York on December 8, 1959, at the Anta Theatre, starring Rex Harrison, Natasha Parry and Roddy McDowall, in a production directed by Peter Brook. (Brook was Parry's husband. Unfortunately, the book misspells Parry's name as Perry.) Translated from the French and adapted by Lucienne Hill. 8vo., 121 pages. Wrinkles on front paste down (a production error) and scratch on rear cover. Otherwise, about Near Fine in a white dust jacket with slightly toned spine and creased, closed tear to rear panel. Exhibition of Japanese ceramics at the Clay Studio, Philadelphia, from September 23 to October 30, 2011. Eight Japanese artists each contributed five examples of their work. Nicely illustrated, with artists' statements and lists of their exhibitions. In English and Japanese. With an introduction by Felice Fischer, curator of East Asian Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, foreword by Jeff Guido, artistic director of the Clay Studio, and a preface by Makiko Maki, Five by Eight committee representative. Calverton (1900-1940), who founded the Modern Quarterly, a Marxist journal. He says that the U.S. has a revolutionary tradition and that the working class can build upon that tradition. No. 15 in the John Day series of pamphlets. SCARCE. A fragment of an unfinished novel, written ca. 1955, featuring the musings of a neurotic man. Beckett told his bibliographers that the fragment resulted from an attempt to return to fiction in English. "Asked why it ends abruptly, he replied, 'there was just no more to be said.'" (Raymond Federman and John Fletcher, Samuel Beckett: His Works & His Critics, An Essay in Bibliography, 1970.)
Our copy is the first appearance of "From an Abandoned Work" in book form. Trinity News, the student newspaper at the University of Dublin (Beckett's alma mater), first published the fragment in 1956. That was followed by a reprint in the Evergreen Review and a broadcast by the BBC in 1957. Federman and Fletcher 33.
