An intriguing examination from this prolific American author of the whole field of ghosts, hauntings, apparitions, manifestations, poltergeists, spirit voices, etc., with chapters on individual cases - "Borley Rectory", "The Dark Lady of Bognor Regis", "The Affair at Tedworth", etc. With a bibliography, index, etc. There would appear to be no equivalent American edition. Demy 8vo (23cm). (192)pp. Original violet boards, lettered in silver; top edge purple; very slightly bruised at foot, but otherwise a very good copy in the stylish C. R. Evans dust-jacket - price-clipped and just a touch sunned, but with only a hint of wear and also very good.

The calm and serenity of Blandings Castle disturbed - "A pretty girl in distress, the mending of sundered hearts, the introduction of imposters into his brother's demesne, all come alike to Gally. Admittedly one or two of his schemes go awry en route". The ninth Blandings Castle book, first published in the USA as "The Brinkmanship of Galahad Threepwood". Post 8vo (21cm). 224pp. Original red boards, lettered in gilt; a few slight marks and spots to edges; mild tanning to endpapers and outer leaves, but otherwise a very good copy in the dust-jacket by Payne - the jacket price-clipped, a touch sunned, with some faint tanning to flaps, and a few spots to rear panel, but also very good.

Original red cloth, pictorially blocked and lettered in gilt and black on upper cover and spine; all edges gilt; a little bruised; covers with some patches of fading and discolouration to edges; endpapers tanned; some internal marks and creases; but a good and still bright copy. Hichens' celebrated international best-seller of love, faith and sand — a socialite seeks solace in the desert — "Unique in fiction — a soul's tragedy with which no mortal love or strength can grapple … not merely a fine book, but a book which deserves to live" (London Evening Standard, 20th October 1904). Young Scotsman unwittingly enters a Babylonian London underworld, including the remarkable Tommy Splint - "Splint, 'cause w'en I was picked up, a small babby, at the work'us door, my left leg was broke, an' they 'ad to put it up in splints; Tommy, 'cause they said I was like a he-cat; w'ich was a lie!". The second novella in this Ballantyne double-bill relates the story of fun-loving, free-and-easy Jeff Benson on the south-east coast. Crown 8vo (20cm). iv,260,32pp advertisements. Original wrappers; a little worn and slightly dusty, but a very good example of a scarce, fragile and ephemeral production.

Engraved by Joseph Wilson Lowry (1803-1879) from an original study by the gifted Thomas Allom. Originally produced for the part-work "Northern Tourist" series (London : 1832-1835).
