Description:
Abingdon: Tourret Publishing, 2003. This book reviews the engineering works, civil and mechanical, carried out by the Great Western Railway in the decade 1928-1938. In this period, it almost seems that the GWR were rebuilding their whole system, so extensive were the works that were carried out. Bearing in mind that these years covered more or less the 1930s years of industrial depression with high unemployment, it is all the more impressive that the GWR accomplished so much, indeed these foundations mostly remain today. The government of the day helped by passing the Development (Loan Guarantees and Grants) Act of 1929, under which the government could pay the interest on capital expended on schemes of development. Most railways took advantage of this Act, but none more so than the GWR, who participated in the anticipation that trade would improve and there would be a need for better railway transport facilities. By the end of 1933, they had 35 separate schemes involving a total of about…

Description:
Barnsley: Pen & Sword Military, 2015. The Gallipoli Campaign is generally viewed as a disastrous failure of the First World War, inadequately redeemed by the heroism of the soldiers and sailors who were involved in the fighting. But before the first landings were made, the concept of a strike at the Dardanelles seemed to offer a short cut to victory in a war without prospect of end. The venture, and what was required of the men undertaking it who were enduring heavy casualties, eminently deserve reconsideration in the centenary year of the campaign. What fuelled and what drained morale during the eight months of extraordinary human endeavour? A balanced evaluation of the Gallipoli gamble, and of the political and military leadership, are the challenging tasks which Peter Liddle sets himself in his new study of the campaign and the experience of the men who served in it.. 1st Edition. Description:
New York: Springer, 2015. The adult patient diagnosed with or at risk for a neurogenetic disease has many questions and concerns for the genetic counselor, the neurologist, and other practitioners. Because of the emotional and potentially life-altering impact of these diseases on the patient and family, counseling can be especially challenging. A rare hands-on guide to the subject, Genetic Counseling for Adult Neurogenetic Disease deals with core issues that differentiate adult neurogenetic counseling from its more familiar pediatric counterpart. This innovative book with accompanying videos is designed to fill in deficits in this area typical of training programs in genetic counseling (which have pediatrics and prenatal concentrations) and neurology (which rarely cover genetic counseling). For each condition featured, chapters include a detailed overview of genetic symptoms, diagnostic criteria, and management, plus guidelines for asking, and answering, pertinent questions. The major concentration,…

London: Kegan Paul, 2005. The dust jacket in rather edge worn. In the mid-twentieth century, pop music joined classical and folk as an important site of the formation and renewal of nationalism. Rock 'n' Roll and Nationalism: A Multinational Perspective, deals -- in essays on Croatia, Bosnia, England, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Russia, Slovenia, and the United States -- with the fascinating interplay between national and nationalistic identities and emotions and the rock music idiom. This scholarly enquiry brings together the talents of observers of popular music, including academic and independent scholars, and rock performers and journalists. Though the authors use many methodologies to get at their subjects, they all include thick description of the cultural systems around which rock in the eight different countries is structured. Barnsley: Pen & Sword Transport, 2020. This is a biography of two great British engineering pioneers, who did much to develop the world we now live in. George and Robert Stephenson, were at the forefront of early railways and were at the cutting edge of modern engineering history. Industrial historian Anthony Burton looks into these two giants of the late Georgian and early Victorian age, who were responsible for the development of much of the early railway map in both Britain and other parts of the world. The work examines the lives of the two men and their ability to overcome some of the most pressing engineering problems of their time. This is a new work, with newly researched material published here for the first time, which take a fresh look at both pioneering engineers and their achievements.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Barnsley: Pen & Sword Military, 2020. General Hans von Seekt (1866-1936) was the military counterpart of the Weimar Republic, both attempted to restore Germany's international acceptance and security following defeat in World War I and the Treaty of Versailles of 1919. And the failure of both led eventually to the rise of Hitler and Nazi Germany. Hans von Seekt was from the traditional German officer caste, served with distinction on the war and became Chief of the Army Command at the Reichewehr Ministry of the Weimar Republic and Germany's 'supreme soldier'and major military strategist. His role was to re-build the shattered German army in face of the punitive terms of post-war settlement imposed by the victorious Entente Powers which drastically reduced its strength and imposed crippling financial conditions. He aimed to build a modern and efficient military - a new German army - with a main strategy of peaceful defence purposes, and to re-introduce Germany into the community of…

Description:
Barnsley: Pen & Sword Transport, 2017. The German Pacific Locomotive (Its Design and Development) is David Maidments fourth book in the series of Locomotive Profiles published by Pen & Sword. It is the first in the series to tackle an important range of overseas steam locomotives, the German pacific locomotives, which, with the Paris-Orleans pacific in France, were the first of that wheel layout in Europe and came to be the dominant type for express passenger work throughout Western Europe for the following fifty years, until displaced by diesel and electric traction. The German railways in the first two decades of the twentieth century were run principally as regional State railways, and two distinct styles of design developed, which were influenced by the natural terrain. In the south, in the mountainous foothills of the European Alps, four cylinder compound locomotives with comparatively small coupled wheels, most produced by the famous firm of Maffei in Munich, held sway from 1907 until…

Oostebeek: S. I. Publicaties, 2011. The seventh volume in the Propaganda Photo Series describes and depicts the development of the sniper rifle in the German army. After a short introduction on the early developments up to World War I and the era of the Reichswehr, this book gives a detailed description of the German sniper rifles in World War II. Apart from the several models of the G98 and the K98k sniper rifles, the scoped versions of the K43, Sturmgewehr and Fallschirmjägergewehr are described and depicted as well. The most important quality of the Propaganda Photo Series, however, is a unique selection of original German World War II propaganda photos, most never published before. The combination of solid information and original photos makes the Propaganda Photo Series the most extensive and reliable source of German small arms 'in-use', depicting the weapons and equipment as they were actually used.. 1st Edition. Barnsley: Pen & Sword Military, 2021. This book documents the experiences of the Central Powers, specifically Austria-Hungary, Germany and the Ottoman Empire during 1917, as they fought on land, at sea and in the air. Drawing on hundreds of contemporary photographs, many of them never previously published, this book examines the experiences of these three nations, spotlighting not only the events that occurred throughout the year, but the lives of those individuals fighting and dying to defend their homelands, families and friends. Each chapter includes a succinct overview of a single front or theatre of operation, complimenting the hundreds of professional and amateur photographs contained within. Though many of the images are of the German and Austro-Hungarian armies on the _Westfront_ and _Ostfront_, several additional chapters also explore the fighting across other, lesser-known fronts, including the _Sudwest Front_ and in Sinai and Palestine, and Mesopotamia. This book is an excellent pictorial…

Description:
Barnsley: Frontline Books, 2014. Anglo-German naval rivalry before 1914 had been expected to culminate in a cataclysmic fleet action in the North Sea once war was declared, a battle upon which the outcome of the war would depend: yet the two fleets met only once, at Jutland in 1916, and the battle was far from conclusive. In his own account of the war in the North Sea, first published in 1920, Admiral Scheer, the German commander at Jutland, gives his own explanation for the failure of either fleet to achieve the decisive victory expected of it, particularly the failure of his own operation plans that resulted in the battle of Jutland. This book is an invaluable account of one of the most important theatres of the First World War, written by one of its most senior commanders.. Hard Cover. New/New. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
