Description:

Dublin: Dolmen Press, 1953. First edition, limited to 25 numbered large paper copies signed by Milne and 175 numbered ordinary copies of which this copy is #100 (unpaginated [19 pp.], list of publications). Tall octavo (23cm) in plain, light-green boards; vigorous decorations by Mia Cranwell, set in Poliphilus type, printed and bound by hand. The ninth  publication by Liam Miller’s Dolmen Press (1951- 1987). The Irish poet Ewart Milne (1903- 1987) was among the writers in the generation which followed W. B. Yeats and served with the international Spanish Medical Aid during that country’s civil war; he gradually divested himself of his early communist idealism and, as many writers and intellectuals of his time, took on conservative views. A good bibliography together with a brief biographical sketch can be found on the Princess Grace Irish Library site (pgil-eirdata.org).  Plain green covers sunned at the edges; otherwise a fine, bright copy.  A rare item.

Boston: Little, Brown, 1907. First edition (xiv, 215) with a hundred or so photo plates illustrating garden design and ornament. An important association, signed and with the inscription to ‘Charles Francis Adams 2nd from Loring Underwood’ boldly on the ffep. Octavo, decorative green publisher’s cloth featuring a fountain seen through an arch, gilt titles, t.e.g.. Tips, bottom edge of spine lightly rubbed. A fine looking copy. Loring Underwood, whose work as a landscape architect can be found, for example, at Vassar College and, at least for a while at Belmont, Massachusetts, where he designed at his brother Henry’s behest the first outdoor municipal swimming pool in the U. S. The photographs by Loring Underwood portray such garden ‘accessories’ as summer houses, espaliered peach trees on a brick wall, sundials, pergolas, a wall fountain. Sometimes an accessory is a crude looking hut, evocative of a certain rusticity, and at others a miniature Greek temple, its geometry… Read more

Description:
Paris: Herissant et Barrois, 1789. First edition (498 pp., appendix, index, errata). Octavo in full leather, gilt titles to spine, yellow washed edges. The first edition of the notable work of this botanist whose work, along with that of Linnaeus, formed the basis for the classification system of modern botany. His notion of ‘family’, for example, still informs modern botanical descriptions. Solid and tightly bound; hinges skilfully repaired, covers and tips worn; mild damp-staining to some early pages but still a good, clean text. An attractive copy of a (truly) seminal botanical study. Paris in 1789. What a time to publish!

Description:
Newcastle-upon Tyne: Thomas Bewick et al., 1790. First edition (index, viii, 456) with numerous wood engravings by Bewick. Tall octavo, rebacked in new three-quarter leather over original polished calf; new silver gilt titles on new label; new endpapers; five pages with repaired tears (archival tape). Thomas Bewick (1753- 1828), a contemporary of William Blake, confined his work to more ordinary subjects than those addressed by that mystic poet- engraver. The General History of Quadrupeds (1790) and the History of British Birds (1797) are Bewick’s most important works, each of which was issued in a number of editions in his lifetime. A complete description of his work as an engraver, however, comprises two entire volumes (1867- 68). Bewick’s Memoir, published by a daughter in 1862, describes ‘an early impulse to draw [which] constantly filled the margins of his schoolbooks’. To his ‘rustic neighbours [he] became an eminent painter, and the walls of their houses were… Read more

Description:
New York: DeWitt & Davenport, 1855. First edition (viii, 362, adverts) in original decorative brown cloth, gilt titles. Skillfully rebacked preserving original titles, decoration to spine; light wear to bottom edge and corners; spotted and toned throughout as usual. ‘Mrs. Moodie’ was writing for the pot when she composed this novel of infidelity in language reflective of prevalent middle class sensibilities. ‘Angling’ is a ‘gentle craft’ and the fish are the ‘finny tribe’. Those readers were fond of Gothic romance, and Susanna heaped their plates with it. When a distraught Alice Morningston throws herself in among the ‘finny tribe’ at Sir Alexander’s favourite fishing hole, Nature reflects Alice’s turmoil: ‘Now all was black and lowering; lightnings pierced with their arrowy tongues the heavy foliage of the frowning woods, and loud peals of thunder reverberated among the distant hills; and now a solitary sunbeam struggled through… Read more

London: T. Osborn, 1746. Second edition (xvi, adverts., 487,4, index). Tall octavo in full leather (professionally refurbished original calf) with nine engraved copperplate illustrations, two folding, by Cole including that of a plough, the world (as known in the mid- eighteenth century), the constellations, plane and olive trees, and hyacinthus poeticus (which resembles the turk’s head lily). With the bookplate of [Canon] A. F. Smethurst. The greater part of each page in Martyn’s translation is devoted to a commentary on perhaps a half-dozen lines of Virgil’s text, and much of that commentary comprises comparisons between and among translations as, for example, between those of Dryden and Trapp. John Martin (1699- 1768), professor of Botany at Cambridge, wrote towards the end of a time when the study of natural history in all its branches was pre-occupied with the translation and exegesis of the works of natural history originating in classical antiquity, among which Virgil’s… Read more

New-York: Collins, 1811. First edition (vi, 112 pp.), illustrated. 12mo., half leather and marbled paper over boards, gilt title and decoration to spine, sprinkled edges. Binding rubbed, tips worn, previous owner’s name/date on ffep. Samuel Bard (1742- 1821), perhaps best known for his work on midwifery, was assistant surgeon to George Washington and later helped found the faculty of medicine at Columbia University (where a chair of medicine is named in his honour). This little book, intended to improve livestock farming in the northeast by the introduction of merino sheep, gives details of British and Scandinavian practises as well as suggestions arising from Bard’s own experience at his Hyde Park farm. Bard was far from alone in championing the merino sheep-- see, for example, Robert L. Livingston’s Essay on Sheep (New-York, 1809). Indeed it would appear there was something of a ‘merino sheep craze’ which, although much tamer than tulip madness, attracted many agriculture… Read more
