Tbilisi: Samkhedro stamba, 1923. 139, [4] pp. 22.5x15.5 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Restored and slightly soiled, blank lower corners of p. 41-44 lost, some pale water stains and small tears, otherwise very good and clean. First edition. One of 1000 copies. A very rare collaboration between two esteemed representatives of Georgian art, Iona Vakeli (1900-1988) and Irakli Gamrekeli. This book is probably one of the only examples by Gamrekeli of a series of abstract drawings for a book of poetry. The main motifs are the industrial city, pictured in chaotic lines and odd angles combined with dancing signboards. The work anticipates the design for H2SO4. Interestingly Gamrekeli used the poor quality of paper available at the time to the advantage of his sharp black & white images. Published in 1923, "Sharavandedi" marked a major breakthrough in the career of the Georgian proletarian poet and playwright, Iona Vakeli. Still only twenty-three years old, the Tbilisi State University student had been…

An interesting Soviet edition dedicated to the gastric cancer surgery. Written by the Privatdozent and the employee of the Cancer Institute Alexander Vereshchinsky (1894-) in 1932, this book represents an atlas and explanatory text to the technique of resection of the pyloric part of the stomach in gastric cancer. The edition is the extended version of the article 1119 sluchayev raka zheludka [i.e. 1119 Cases of Stomach Cancer] written by Vereshchinsky and published in the magazine Vestnik khirurgii [i.e. Surgery Herald] in 1929. The great interest shown by readers to the article prompted the author to publish an extended version of the text. The present work provides a systematic description, illustrated with a large number of black and white drawings (47), of individual stages of gastric resections in the form in…

Moscow: Der Emes, 1941. 256 pp.: iIl., maps. 22.6x14.9 cm. In original publisher's cardboards. Spine and edges slightly rubbed. Otherwise near fine. Scarce. Third edition. ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR GEOGRAPHY MANUALS IN YIDDISH PUBLISHED FEW YEARS BEFORE THE SUPPRESSION OF JEWS IN THE SOVIET UNION. In the USSR geography was introduced as a separate subject in school education in 1927. Seven years later, with the adoption of the decree On Teaching Geography in Primary and Secondary Schools the position of geography in the curriculum fundamentally changed. From that time on, the Soviet education system started working on the improvement of the content of the academic subject, as a result of which new textbooks on geography began to appear. In 1935, a graduate of the Saint Petersburg Imperial University and professor of geography, Germogen Ivanov (1868-1941), compiled the famous geography textbook for secondary schools, Geography of Parts of the World and Major Countries (Except for the USSR). The…

One of 1000 copies. A Cubist portrait of the author by Irakli Gamrekeli on the front cover. Description:
Tbilisi, 1932. 18 pp.: ill. 30,5x21,5 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Very good, spine slightly chipped, ink underlinings. One of 6000 copies. Rare. In Georgian. 'Drosha' [Flag] was the main artistic and literary magazine published in Tbilisi from 1923 to 1935. Although initially 'Drosha' was a bimonthly periodical, its frequency fluctuated due to insufficient funds. The first editor-in-chief, the secretary for the Party Committee in Georgia, Mikheil Kakhiani (1896-1937), was executed in 1937 under the terrorism legislation. The design of 'Drosha' changed over the years reflecting the different styles dominant in Georgian art. In the first period in 1923-24, the magazine was dominated by David Kutateladze, who designed the wrappers and the lettering - he was clearly influenced by Ilia Zdanevich's letterpress designs. Also artists Krylov (1902-1990) and Mikheil Gotsiridze (1901-1975) published their experimental works in a couple of issues. In 1925-26, a less inspired period of design, the…

Description:
Moscow: Rabotnik prosveshcheniya, 1930. 120 pp. In original printed wrappers. Partly uncut. Very good. First edition. Scarce. A research on religious dissemination in Soviet schools. The charter of the Unified Labor School in the Soviet Union completely excluded the possibility of teaching the doctrine of Christianity and familiarizing with the rites of a religious cult. One of the criteria for the competition for the best teacher in 1923 was an active desire to eradicate religious prejudice from the classroom. By the end of the 1920s, the wave of the struggle against religiosity among children began to grow rapidly: in 1928, a compulsory anti-religious hour was introduced in schools and the corresponding theme began to fill the ABCs and books in elementary grades. Yet, the teaching corps turned out not to be prepared for the propaganda of militant atheism. Religious beliefs were still strong and many educators attended church, sold crosses to students and convinced them of the divine origin of…

Moscow: Moskovskii rabochii, 1932. 40 pp.: ill. 17x12,5 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Tear near the staple, previous owner's marks, otherwise very good. First and only edition. One of 10 000 copies. This is an interesting work on the effectivity of the atheist publications in the local Red Army periodicals. The atheism was set as one of the key components of the Soviet man's worldview. The period of the 1920s is characterized by relative freedom for atheist organizations. In 1929, a circular "On Measures Strengthening Anti-religious Work" marked the moment when the propaganda had come under direction of the Communist Party. The existed godless editions were declared weak and insufficient for the mass campaign. The situation had reached the crisis point - the printed media had to change the content and style of texts. An atheist journalist G. Struchkov gave the set of guidelines on how the anti-religious publications should be written. He obliged the journalists to observe the activity of…

With 15 black and white photographs and recommendations for young artists by Auguste Rodin and Antoine Bourdelle. Wrapper design probably by Nesterov. Innokenty Nikolaevich Zhukov (1875-1948) was a famous self-taught sculptor, innovative teacher, writer, a prominent figure in the scout movement in Russia and one of the founders of the pioneer movement in the USSR. As a teacher and favorite of students, Zhukov became famous for his many innovations and active participation in the children's movement - first scouts, and then pioneers. The very word "pioneer" for the participants in the children's movement of the Soviet period was proposed by him. Zhukov took modeling and sketching lessons in fits and starts at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg and then in Paris (at the Academy of Antoine Bourdelle), where he went in 1912 on a…
