A very good copy, sunned along the extremities, with a touch of foxing to the first and last few leaves. Clean and crisp internally, apart from contemporary owner's name on the front free endpaper. In a good dust jacket, chipped along the extremities.

Fort Leavenworth, Kansas: Command and General Staff School, 1944. First Edition (?). Clasped binding. Very good. Tall quarto, unpaginated (made up of several smaller subsections, which are paginated. Overall, about 100pp.). A very good, minimally handled copy in the publisher's card covers, with a clasped binding. Some scuffing and an "archive copy" stamp to the front wrap, and some pencil underlining and many notes (and responses to questions) internally. Still, a rare military handbook from the middle of the American involvement in the Second World War. Though scant bibliographic information exists, we were unable to find a similar item in OCLC at the time of listing.

Alliance, Ohio: Novelty Capsule Co, 1900. Very good. A novelty puzzle game, consisting of a two-piece box, measuring about 2 5/8" x 6". Box is covered in yellow paper, printed in black. Inside the box is a nicely lithographed view of the Klondike Gold Rush region, with named places, such as Yukon River, Skaguay [sic] Trail, and Chilkoot Pass. In the center of the map is a gold-plated rimmed bowl with the word "Klondike" stamped in black. Two capsules (of three) containing a ball bearing are loosely inserted (the third ball bearing is present, but missing its capsule). The capsules are painted gold, though most of the gold is faded away. Per the instructions on the box: "The object of this puzzle is to get the three gold bugs into the Klondike through the Pass." A small opening on one side of the rim in the center allows for the player to get the "nuggets" into the bowl. Leeds, UK: (self-published), 1990. Second revised edition. Staplebound. Very good. Square octavo, 2 volumes; 90pp. altogether. A very good set in the publisher's stapled warps. Staples rested and mild creasing to the corners, but a nice set. Scarce and very detailed bibliography of Fritz Lieber.

[Munchen]: Piloty & Lohle, 1860. Hardcover. Good +. 12mo, 38 album leaves, with tipped-in photographs, as issued. Bound in the publisher's full red morocco, stamped in gilt, with gilt brass buttons, silk endpapers, and all edges gilt. No title page present, and we presume that it is probably lacking one. Spine perished and replaced adequately, if inartfully, with red cloth tape. Endpapers discolored. Photographs in excellent condition, with captions in ink. Overall, a good or better example. Bears the ownership signature of one Mary Davis of Munich, who has dated her inscription to 1875. The inked captions appear to be in her same hand. This is a kind of souvenir book for the famous "Gallery of Beauties," an exhibition of portraits of distinguished ladies in the Court of Bavaria in the mid-19th century. New York: Horace Liveright, 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good +/Poor. Octavo, 2 volumes, 823pp. Both volumes very good or better with some fading and darkening to the spines. Otherwise a crisp, clean set with sharp corners. Dust jackets both poor and in several parts, with most of the spine missing on Volume I and only the rear panel and flap present on Volume II. Lacks the publisher's slipcase. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Dreiser on the front free endpaper of Volume I: "Vol 1./For Dorothy/from/T. D./N. Y. Aug 1930." He wrote just his initials, not his whole name, but there is enough writing to indicate that this is definitely Dreiser's handwriting. While "Dorothy" isn't one of the women profiled in the "Gallery," she clearly must have known him personally, and rather well. SIGNED and warmly INSCRIBED by the author on the title page in the year of publication. There is also a laid-in postcard from Maitland to the previous owner, with a five-line autograph note. Scarce signed.

Octavo, 467pp. A fragile copy in the publisher's pale green wraps, split into two parts at pp. 192-193, but holding by one string, which seems to be holding rather tightly. Front wrap and the first signature are similarly loose, but attached. Some internal foxing. Moderate wear to the spine, pparticularly at the top of the crown Overall, a good copy at best. Some leaves still unopened. An entirely unsophisticated copy; scarce in the original wraps.

London: William Heinemann, 1923. Later printing. Hardcover. Good +. Octavo, 312pp. Sixth impression of the first edition of the Constance Garnett translation. The "Other Stories" mentioned in the title are two excellent novellas by Dostoevsky, "Poor People" (often translated as "Poor Folk") and "The Landlady." A good or slightly better copy in the publisher's red cloth. Cloth somewhat soiled, spine dulled, and some gentle foxing to prelims; else a clean, sound copy. Seemingly one of the scarcest of these Garnett translation in early printings. Uncommon.

New York: Arno Press / New York Times, 1973. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo, 299pp. Ex-library with the usual markings. Otherwise a very good copy in the publisher's blue cloth, with minimal edgewear.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1895. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Large square octavo, 192pp., illustrated by the author. A crisp, clean, very near fine copy in the publisher's decorative light green cloth. Just a touch of light soiling to the cloth, two nicks at the crown, the frontispiece a bit proud, but intact, and a contemporary gift inscription on the front free endpaper. Rear inner hinge just starting, but holding well. Altogether a very handsome, gift-quality example. Pyle was the founding spirit behind the Brandywine School of illustration, with which Norman Rockwell, Maxfield Parrish, N. C. Wyeth, and many other artists had some association.
