Description:
New York: Camera Club of New York, 1899. Published in Camera Notes, April 1899. 6 7/8" by 5 1/8". Printed as a photogravure by the Photochrome Engraving Company, a company that Alfred Stieglitz had founded. Image size is 7 3/4 inches by 4 3/4 inches. Frances Benjamin Johnston (1864-1952) is best known for her work both as an architectural photographer whose images of Southern American houses were the basis for six books and as a documentary photographer who introduced Hampton Institute and Tuskegee Institute to the world. But before all that she was a pictorialist and a member of the Photo-Secession. The scarce photogravure "Gainsborough Girl" is a superb example of her pictorial photography. The photogravure is in excellent condition: a strong impression that is in virtually as-new condition. Now archivally matted in an off-white passe-partout and ready to be framed in a standard 11" by 14" frame.. First Edition. Single Sheet. Fine. Illus. by Frances Benjamin… Read More

Description:
London: William S. Orr & Co., 1848. This is not a complete book--it is a single sheet containing an original antique hand-colored botanical print. Joseph Paxton was perhaps the most significant 19th century English botanist, the designer of the famed Crystal Palace, and the editor of Paxton's Magazine of Botany and Register of Flowering Plants. This print is from the 14th volume of that magazine, published in 1848. Drawn and lithographed by Samuel Holden, it is a superb brilliantly-colored example of the flowers in the magazine. The lithograph is accompanied by the original text pages explaining the origin, cultivation, and uses of the flower. The print is clean and bright, with a hint of toning of the background and the usual stab holes along the binding edge.. First Edition. Paper. Collectible-Fine. Illus. by Samuel Holden. 9" by 6 3/8". Boston: J. Shaw, 1828. iv, 300 pages. This early gothic novel, originally published in 1805 under the author's marital name (Thayer), attempted to reveal the personal and social hazrds of gambling. Description:
New York: Lieber and Lewis, 1922. Original linocut, from an edition limited to 500 impressions. Alfred Frueh (1880-1968) began his art career in1903, drawing editorial cartoons and theatre caricatures for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He became a national figure when his 1907 satirical drawing of music hall star Fritzi Scheff was so offensive to her that she cancelled a scheduled performance in St. Louis. Frueh later became a cartoonist for the New York World, doing caricatures of leading Broadway personalities. In 1912 he mounted an exhibition of his caricatures for an exhibition at "291", the New York art gallery of Alfred Stieglitz, who praised the exhibition: "Frueh is to be congratulated for the delightful manner in which he has depicted his impressions of our entertainers, displaying a pictorial sense of line and color, an ability to seize the significant characters of each individual and emphasize them with a gentle if sometimes mordant irony." In 1922 Lieber and Lewis… Read More
