Description:
Ex-Library, cover is a bit curled, slightly soiled and scuffed with some edgewear and bent corners. The binding is tight, the textblock pages are clean of marks besides library numbers and stamps. There is a wetstain on the first flyleaf top corner and a crease on the bottom of pg 63/64.
This rare book is a collection of provocative, critical and autobiographical essays on photography. The author, a photography critic, struggles to find what is and what lies behind any photograph. He recalls family members through the frozen reality of pictures taken at different times. He offers a compact history of the Polaroid, and informative remarks on noted photographic travel journals. And he ponders the differences between visual erotica and pornography; his own occasional role as model causes ambivalence.

This illustrator's first book is a collection of previously published illustrations (New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, CBC, The New Yorker) as well as new drawings and comics. Included is a reprint of her mini-comic, City of Champions, as well as a new comic, The Tapemines--a wordless scroll about feral children in forests of cassette tape. With inspirations including Japanese and Inuit printmakers, as well as German expressionists, the illustrator's unique style often celebrates the inherent beauty in the grotesque, while remaining character-driven and focused on observational narrative.

A wide-ranging, comparative…and controversial study of mythology and religion, written in 1890 (the single volume 1922) by a Scottish anthropologist.
