Gotha, Justus Perthes, 1876. 4to (26.4 x 22.2 cm). 42 pp., one coloured map. Disbound. = Gustav Adolf Haggenmacher (1845-1875) was a Swiss explorer and spy in the service of Egypt. He travelled through the Horn of Africa from December 1873 to March 1874. These are the results of his voyage. On a second voyage, in 1875, he died in Afar, Ethiopia. Published in Ergänzungsheft 47 of Petermann's famous Geographische Mitteilungen. Apart from the narrative it includes chapters on the fysical geography, ethnography and ethnology, farming, industry and trade, a history of the Somali's, and a detailed meteorological table. The map is quite detailed, as always. Map loose, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Rare.

In cardboard frame (35.0 x 24.0 cm). = A fine, large, originally hand-coloured illustration by the famous Dutch bird illustrator John Gerrard Keulemans (1842-1912), showing the vegetarian finch, Camarhynchus variegatus Sclater and Salvin, 1870 (male and female), and in fact the type specimens of this famous bird - being one of the "Darwin finches" of the Galapagos islands, and perhaps better known as Platyspiza crassirostris (John Gould, 1837). Keulemans is widely regarded as the best bird painter of his time, if not the best ever. Published in the Society's Transactions (Vol. 9), the leading zoological series in the 19th century, and one of the very few published in this large format. Speckled edges. Original printed wrappers bound in. = A rare, complete copy. The work contains the description and illustration of the collection of molluscs in the museum of Douai (northern France). The museum collection was destroyed in WWII, augmenting the importance of the (good) images in the atlas. Many figured specimens were original types of species described by the authors and still regarded as valid today. Sainte-Savine, Association Géologique Auboise, [1988]. Folio (29.4 x 20.9 cm). 135 pp.; seven plates. Pictorial soft cover. = A rare, Fench translation of a very uncommon work, originally published, in German, by the Naturhistorisches Museum, in Vienna, in four parts (1976-1982), as Gastropoden aus den Losensteiner Schichten der Umgebung von Losenstein (Oberösterreich). It incudes the complete description, with many new genera and species, of some Middle Albian to Lower Cenomanian (i.e., earliest upper and latest lower Cretaceous) malacofaunas of which the quality of the preserved specimens is quite good. Very early representatives of the Muricidae and Cancellariidae are included. Well-illustrated. Translated by J. Pietresson de Saint Aubin. Loosely inserted: a letter signed by the association's president (dated 20 avril 1988), making excuses for the delay in publication. A very good, clean copy.

Original blindstamped cloth with gilt title on the spine. = An excellent copy of the original, bound edition, which is very uncommon outside North America. Includes the descriptions and illustrations of many new species of Late Cretaceous and Palaeogene molluscs. The state of preservation of the fossils is from rather poor to quite good. This part is much rarer than the one on the bivalves and brachiopods. Weak bump to spine top, interior good, clean, without the usual ex library markings.

Original printed wrappers. = Good introduction to the form and shape of fossil (from the oldest to the modern) and Recent gastropods. The plates give schematical images of gastropod genera and the captions emphasise on the differential characters. Spine taped with cloth strip and transparent rape on top; cut out at lower outer corner of title page. Otherwise good. Rare. No other copies on the internet.

Disbound. = A seldom-seen publication with Linnaeus's first description of the gaura, a flowering plant much appreciated by horticulturists, which he received from USA. A detailed description, with a very fine plate. This work was published in the academy's Handlingar. A very good, clean copy. Soulsby, 545.

Original paper spine with printed title laid down; original front wrapper mounted on frront board. = This "Festschrift", with contributions by 45 geologists and palaeontologists, is Verhandelingen van het Geologisch-Mijnbouwkundig Genootschap voor Nederland en koloniën Geologische serie, deel VIII. It mainly deals with the geology and palaeontology of Indonesia, but there are also several papers on New Zealand (three), and other places. A seldom-seen bound copy. Weak stamp on front wrapper; light shelf wear, otherwise an excellent, clean and unmarked copy.

Colombo, The National Museums of Ceylon, 1932. Small 4to (24.6 x 18.1 cm). 20 pp., seven plates. Printed wrappers. = This paper deals with all the Recent gekkos known from Ceylon (= Sri Lanka). With keys to the species, notes on specimens found in Ceylonese localities, including data on the habits and habitats. The fine plates are by the author. Deraniyagala used Gekkonoideae as superfamily name. ADDED: "The barnacles Stephanolepas and Chelonibia from the turtle Eretmochelys imbricata", by C. A. Nilsson-Cantell (eight pp., several text figures, three plates). This paper includes a list of barnacles known to live on and in turtles. Published in Spolia Zeylanica with some other papers on Sri-Lankan zoology and the issue's wrappers. A very good, clean copy. Rare.

Light yellow endpapers. All edges gilt. = The sensationalist title should be ignored. The work - written by the Enlish missionary William Gill (1813-1878), not to be confused with another missionary, William Wyatt Gill (1828-1896) - deals with zelotic attempts to convert habitants of western Polynesia and eastern Polynesia (including Penrhyn island, Savage islands, Hebrides, Loyalty group and New Caledonia) to Christianity, and the chief merit of this work is the description of cultures and customs from before their demise. Particularly moving is the description of a meeting with a local man on the island of Mangaia, named Tira (second part, p. 161). Contemporary marbled boards with green paper spine cover with script title. Speckled edges. = Three works on true bugs (Hemiptera) and in particular the aquatic taxa, by the Czech entomologist Franz Xaver Fieber (1807-1872), all from the same year, which was his most productive. Containing excellent descriptions and detailed drawings - by the author - of many new or poorly known genera and species. Also published in the Actis Regiae Bohemicae Societatis Scientiarum, with J. G. Calve as publisher, but apparently these separately published copies are dated and - quite probably - published earlier. ADDED: a handwritten, signed and dated letter by Fieber, written in German with a French translation, to the French hemipterologist Victor Signoret (1816-1889), partly about the three works present here, which he donated to Signoret. Original printed wrappers. = A mint copy of this important monograph which includes descritions and illustrations of new tribes and a new genus. Written by the Belgian entomologist of Russian descent, Serge Grégoire Kiriakoff (1898-1984).

Contemporary uniform quarter calf over iridescent boards. Spines with four raised bands; compartments blind-tooled, with gilt ornamental bands and title. Patterned edpapers. Marbled edges. = Rare complete, uniform bound set from the "golden age" of descriptive botany, published over a long time and edited by two of the foremost British botanists of the second half of the 19th century, George Bentham (1800-1884), and Charles Darwin's closest friend, John Dalton Hooker (1817-1911). This monumental synthesis - later dubbed the Bentham & Hooker sysyem - was based on critical analysis of the material in the Kew Herbarium and Gardens and is a masterly and meticulous extension of Candolle's outdated system. Spine with printed paper label. = First part of one of Pierre André Latreille's most significant works, including all the plates. "While Latreille praised Cuvier for having founded zoological classification on comparative anatomy, he based his own classification work primarily on the consideration of external characters. Nonetheless, as one of his successors remarked more than half a century after the appearance of the 'Genera', the work offered "such an exact exposition of the characters of the insects, arachnids, and crustaceans, and nearly always such a just appreciation of the natural affinities of these animals, that the most modern researches only added rectifications of a second order" (DSB). Bonariae (Buenos Aires), G. Krafft, 1950. Large 4to (35.3 x 26.3 cm). Several title and dedication pages, 388 pp.; 26 plates (of which 12 in full colour). Original embossed and printed cloth. Pictorial endpapers. Edges red. = The most important and by far the most beautiful illustrated work on the Rhopalocera of South America, published in a 19th century style. This copy is ample proof of how regrettable it is that such works are no longer issued. This part II, like part I deals with Hesperiidae, but part II is on Hesperiinae. The original descriptions of the species treated are repeated in full in their original languages. Only 1000 numbered (stamped and signed by the editor, Descole) copies were printed by Guillermo Krafft after drawings of various artists. This is copy number 206. Today all parts are very difficult to obtain. A third and fourth part were published much later, in 1964 and 1967 and are not included as well. A fine clean copy.

Boston, MA, James Munroe, New York, NY, George P. Putnam, 1848-1849. Two volumes in two. 8vo (23.5 x 15.1 cm). 460 (230; 230) pp.; 186 (100; 86) engraved plates. Original uniform black blind-stamped cloth. Gilt title on the spines. Yellow endpapers. = Rare and important, pleasantly illustrated flora of North America by the eminent American botanist Asa Gray (1810-1888). Nissen mentions only 180 plates. We, however, have 186, as called for. A few plates with contemporary hand-colouring, a few additional plant illustrations in light pencil on plate versos. Provenance: dated dedication on the front free endpaper recto ("to Prof. A. G. Wilson / from Rev. J. Rice / Scotch Grove / Iowa / Sept. 6 1888"). Rebacked, with most of the original spine covers preserved. The text of Volume I slightly toned as usual. Some foxing, rather strong on a few plates, a small indention or hole (hit by a bullet?) in the last few plates and rear board (the latter repaired). Nissen BBI, 749; Stafleu and Cowan, 2125.

Vitoduri Helvetorum (Winterthur), Steiner and Socios, 1789. 4to. 25 fine, hand-coloured engraved plates by Schellenberg, numbered II-IV, VI-VII, IX-XIII, XV-XIX, XXII-XXIII, XXV-XXXII. = A collection of 25 loose plates from one of the most attractive Swiss publications on entomology. The plates are very beautifully drawn and engraved by the famous Swiss artist J. Schellenberg (an accomplished entomologist himself). The plates depict up to 30 insects per plate. Uncut (except plates II, XIII and XXXII), with the widest possible margins. Hardly any spotting. Hagen II, p. 83; Horn-Schenkling, 18262; Nissen ZBI, 3461.

Kjöbenhavn, H. C. Klein [Paa kongelig bekostning], 1841. Large, thick 8vo (25.1 x 17.0 cm). xii, 613, xxii pp.; 25 engraved plates on 24 leaves. Contemporary polished half calf over marbled boards. Spine with blind embossed and gilt bands; gilt title. = A very seldom-seen monograph of Danish beetles, written and illustrated by the Danish entomologist, Coleoptera specialist, and later professor of zoology, Jörgen Matthias Christian Schiödte or Jørgen M. C. Schiødte (1815-1884). This is his first major work. Although stated to be Volume One, this is all that was published. Boards and spine worn, front hinge partly split; binding weak; scattered spotting throughout. Nevertheless, still a good, complete copy. OCLC reports about ten copies in European libraries, however, none in North America. Hagen II, p. 125 [under "Johann Georg Schioedte"]; Horn-Schenkling, 19360; Nissen ZBI, 3676.

London, Macmillan, 1961. 4to (27.0 x 20.5 cm). 6 pp. [1227-1232]; six text figures, three tables. [whole volume: 1322 pp. and oddly numbered wrappers]. Contempory light tan cloth, with title printed in black on the spine. = The first edition of the discovery of the genetic functions of DNA was in Nature vol. 171 (1953), but it took several more years to clarify and understand how, exactly, how the code was read. In this work it was postulated that a group of three bases codes one amino-acid and that the code is of a non-overlapping type. The fundamental issues that Crick, Gamow, Watson and Brenner had embarked upon in the summer of 1954 were now resolved. We offer the complete vol. 192 of Nature (#4797-4809, 1322, cvii pp.). A year later, in December of 1962, Crick, Watson, and Maurice Wilkins went to Stockholm to receive the Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine. Brenner received a Nobel prize in 2002. Lipsiae, Immanuel Titius, 1724. 4to (19.0 x 16.4 cm). Title page, dedication leaf, index and corollaria.; 24 pp.; engraved plate. Without wrappers, as published. = A seldom-seen early work on frogs and their anatomy, defended as a thesis by the German botanist and zoologist Caspar Bose (the younger) (1703-1733), and dedicated to his father ([1672-1730], a botanist of the same name), and uncle, the jurist Johann Jacob Bose (1678-1741). Bose's supervisor, and, in a northern European tradition, the actual the writer of the work, was the professor of philosophy and - later - physics, Johann Friedrich Menz (1673-1749). Apparently a very early edition, as the title contains an erroneous blank space between the (Greek) o and s in paradoxos, corrected in a later edition. The plate a bit shaved, with minimal loss, otherwise a very good, clean copy. We found no auction records. Neither in Nissen nor in Cat. BM(NH).
