This is a short biography of a ledgendary southern sheriff, James Edwin McTeer. At one time the youngest sheriff in the United States, McTeer took care of Beaufort for 37 years. He was thought to be a hoodoo, root, conjure man throughout the community and his help in spiritual matters was held in high regard. People traveled from surrounding counties to seek his advice. After he retired, he became an author; this is one of the four book written by him. In 1981 shortly after his death, a bridge linking the islands to the mainland was named for him.
