Boston: J. E. Tilton and Company, 1864. Embossed Cloth. Very Good binding. Octavo. First edition. Publisher's embossed cloth with title in gold on the spine; spine is sunned; light wear to the extremities including some notable fraying at the top corner of the back board; small closed tears at the spine ends; binding has a backwards lean; contemporary owner name on the front free endpaper else a clean copy with only light and very occasional foxing. Cummins's first novel, Lamplighter enjoyed commercial success as well as Nathanial Hawthorne's derision. Haunted Hearts was Cummins's fourth and final novel before her untimely death in 1866. "A new edition in 1988 of The Lamplighter demonstrates this novel's durability. Even though the other three texts failed to match the commercial impact of her debut, Maria Cummins's importance as the author of an archetypal American romance remains secure" American National Biography. Knoxville, TN: F. S. Keiskell, 1834. Quarter Leather. Good+ binding. 12mo. 299 pp. First edition. In original calf spine with paper over boards expertly renewed with period paper; new pastedown and preliminary blank; final leaf of the contents is supplied in a surprisingly good facsimile. A sophisticated copy, but the conservation was done with great care to the appearance. Spine a bit desiccated but solid; dampstaining to the preliminaries; foxing throughout. A fairly uncommon book by the Tennessee minister, editor, and eventually, post-bellum governor and U.S. Senator. While more known for his role as a newspaper editor with a bent towards the incendiary and his outspoken stance on the Confederacy, manifest in Sketches of the Rise, Progress, and Decline of Secession (1862) and elsewhere, this remains a notable book with several dozen pages of his autobiography and travels. A reasonably early Knoxville imprint. Howes B-882, "aa"; Tennessee Imprints 527, Allen 1113; Smith p. 135-6; Oxford American…
