Description:
Gallipolis, OH: Hank Snow Fan Club, 1961-1966. First Edition. Wraps. Very Good. Hank Snow (1914-1999) was an early and enduring star of the Grand Ole Opry. Best known for his hits, "I'm Moving On," " I Don't Hurt Anymore," and "I've Been Everywhere." Snow overcame a childhood of poverty and abuse to become one of the leading stars of country music in America, becoming a member of the Grand Ole Opry in 1950, and elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1979. Fan club publications were the primary way for stars to maintain a direct connection to fans; with the clubs run by fans, it required little work for stars beyond providing additional copy, tour dates, and occasional photographs. Seven separate issues of the Hank Snow Fan Club News (Winter 1961, Fall 1962, Spring 1963, Summer 1963, Winter 1963, Winter 1964, Spring 1966). Unpag, 8 pp each. 8vo. Black and white fan club publication reports from fan club members report on attending a Hank Snow concert, and "A Message From" that starts each… Read more

Description:
New York: Hastings House Publishers, 1945. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/Fair. An interesting work of photography by Henry Inn, which could be somewhat serious due to its introduction by a sociologist detailing Hawaii's multi-racial background gong back for generations; or as cheesecake with all the photographs depicting pretty young women with their ethnic background listed on the facing page. Nevertheless, significant in that this copy is signed by the author to Eliot Elisofon (1911-1973): "To Eliot Elisofon ALhoa. Henry Inn" with Inn's Japanses red ink "chop" beneath his signature. Elisofon was active as a photographer from 1935 through his death in 1973 and was a staff photographer/correspondent for LIFE Magazine from 1942 through 1972. During his time with LIFE Elisofon pursued freelance projects including a deep interest in Africa and developed an interest and expertise in African Art. Elisofon also spent time as a color consultant in Hollywood. Major collections of his work are held by… Read more

Description:
Madison, WI: John Snyder, Jr., 1941. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Berger (1893-1981) was a midwest magician who grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, as Benjamin Goldenberger. By the early 1940s he had shortened his last name to Berger, by the latter part of that decade was spelling it as Bergor, which he settled on until his death in 1981. Bergor and his wife, Alvina, performed all over the Midwest and brought their two daughters into the act at an early age. Bergor and his wife won the coveted Harry Houdini Trophy three consecutive years (1940, 1941, & 1942) for their performance of Houdini's famous trunk act where Bergor would tie Alvina up in a straightjacket, place her in a large bag, lock her in a steamer trunk that; Bergor would then stand on top of the trunk, raise a curtain, and within moments when the curtain was lowered Alvina would be standing on the trunk and Bergor would be locked in the trunk, in the bag, in the straightjacket. By the mid 1950s Bergor had retired from active… Read more

Description:
Philadelphia, PA: A. J. Holman Company, 1971. As. Full Leather. Fine. A unique, humorous, and poignant item, E. B. White's (1899-1985) personal Bible. Unique in that White has signed the Bible on the second free endpaper, humorous in that he has filled out the pre-printed gift presentation page to himself on May 28, 1975, on the occasion of "his buying a new Bible," and poignant that the only indication of any use is his recording of the death of his wife on the pre-printed page for family information: "Katharine Sergeant White July 20, 1977." According to Martha White, granddaughter of the Whites, neither were religious but as Katharine's health was declining in 1975 she may have asked E.B. to buy a Bible in which to record her death--which he did two years later. Katharine S. White (1892-1977) was the longtime fiction editor at The New Yorker where she met E.B. White in the late 1920s; they were married in 1929. From the Estate of Joel (1930-1997) & Allene White. 280, 166 [Concordance], 22, [8]… Read more

Description:
New York: Hearst Corporation, 1955. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Special edition with pages 233-380 devoted to Wright but also a specially bound issue in red cloth. Filled with color photographs, plans, interiors, and furniture. An important issue in House Beautiful's promotion of Wright's work under the editorial leadership of Elizabeth Gordon; John deKoven Hill, Architectural Editor; and Robert Mosher, Buildings Editor. deKoven Hill and Mosher were former Taliesin Apprentices. [Sweeney 1066] Also significant is that two separate bibliographies are laid in, both by Bernard Karpel, librarian at the Museum of Modern Art. The first, "What Men Have Written About Frank Lloyd Wright" (November 1959) 34 pp, 4to. [Sweeney 1046]. The second, "Frank Lloyd Wright" (October 1959) 10 pp. 4to {Sweeney 1264] was issued as a supplemental to the 1955 bibliography and in conjunction with the October 1959 edition of "House Beautiful" published as a memorial to Wright, who had died on April 9th of that… Read more

Description:
Park Forest, IL: The Prairie School Press, 1963. Facsimile Edition. Hardcover. Fine. A stunning copy of the facsimile edition of "The House Beautiful" produced by William Winslow and his Auvergne Press in 1896/1897. Winslow was a client of Frank Lloyd Wright and enlisted Wright to create the intricate designs that adorn each page. Winslow's original edition was bound with a brown leather spine, here reproduced in cloth. A faithful facsimile, this edition even includes the fourteen page booklet sewn in on the first free endpaper reproducing Wright's photographs of weeds that influenced his designs within. A high point in design from the Arts and Crafts Movement and the Prairie School Movement that was growing in the Midwest at that time. Publisher's one page promotional sheet laid in. [Sweeney 1530]. Unpag. Folio. Green cloth boards with brown cloth over spine that wraps 1/3 of the way to front and rear boards, gold embossed titling to spine and rear board. Top edge gilt. Albuquerque, NM: University of New Mexico Press, 1991. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. Prince, Bart. A survey of the work of Bart Prince at the midpoint of his career. Prince is an architect who was deeply influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright and worked an assistant to architect Bruce Goff (1904-1982). Designing in a highly animated, organic style, his works uses the topography of the site, climate, and other inspirations from nature to design structures that are arresting in site and have high energy efficiency despite their often fanciful appearance. Laid in is a brochure from a 2015 exhibition at the SCA Contemporary Art ARTLAB Studios in Albuquerque titled "The Human Drift: Bart Prince, Steve Barry & T. Fitzallan." Book signed by Bart Prince in heavy marker on the half-title page. First Printing. xiii, 100 pp. 4to.
