Title-page in red and black with engraved vignette. Smudged ink underlining to author's name on p.1, closed marginal tear to p.265 not affecting text. Contemporary vellum, ink title in an old hand to spine, edges speckled blue. A little soiled with some smudges and spots, corners slightly bumped, evidence of beige paper or labels removed from both paste-downs, top edge dusted. Small illegible ownership inscription and separate initials to front endpapers. 'Graevius was the first man who, on the basis of the Aldine edition as reprinted by the Juntae, corrected the errors of Bongarsius, and formed the text of Justin by sober critical rules.' (Dibdin). Superbly-illustrated work on the history and topography of Kent. Each chapter is devoted to a locality, including Ashurst, Cranbrook, Leigh, High Halden, Tunbridge and the Ilse of Oxney. The section of Penshurst, immortalised by Ben Jonson, includes an account focusing on the 16th century, with mentions of Sir Philip Sidney. Contemporary sheep, ruled in gilt, later hand-written paper label to spine. Soiled and lightly browned. Extremities rubbed, joints cracking but sound, a touch of wear to corners, flyleaves excised. Short inscription thoroughly crossed through to corner of title-page. Nicolas Menin (1684-1770) was counsellor to the Parliament of Metz and also published historical fiction anonymously. This study of French royal processes was reissued in 1727 under a different title, and a further edition under yet another title followed 50 years later. ESTC T123498.

William Shrubsole (1729–1797) was an English nonconformist minister, author of works on subjects as varied as local history, theology and even the Sheerness dockyards, where he was employed. The present work discusses the history of Rochester from the 11th century, lingering on its most important monuments. It was finished by the antiquary Samuel Denne, with the assistance of Thomas Fisher, printer, bookseller and alderman of Rochester.
