HH Sheikh Hamad ibn Isa Al Khalifa, KCIE, CSI (1872-1942) was the King (Hakim) of Bahrain from 1923 until his death. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, his palace in Al-Sakhir was a centre where both Gulf Sheikhs and British nobility and political figureheads were regularly invited to dine and discuss foreign policy of the region. The photograph shows the monarch in a deck chair on a ship in the company of noble retainers. The caption reads "Sheikh Hamad. Ruler of group of Islands Persian Gulf".A well-preserved, glossy print in good contrast.

Together with the very rare continuation (published 15 years later), displaying the triumphal arches erected upon William IV's return to The Hague on 6 June 1747.Around 1740 the Dutch Republic got involved in the War of the Austrian Succession, which lead to the occupation of States' Flanders (the northern part of Flanders, part of the Dutch Republic since the Eighty Years' War) by the French in 1747. This caused an enormous unrest in the Republic as this fully exposed the weakness of the Dutch defences, leading to a strong wish for restoration of the stadtholderate. St. John Philby (1885-1960), also known by his Arabian name "Sheikh Abdullah", was an Arabist, explorer, writer, and British colonial office intelligence officer. 29, [1] pp.Second edition of an early treatise claiming to have squared the circle (geometrically constructed a square matching the surface area of a given circle, shown to be impossible in 1882). Falco (Valencia 1522-Madrid 1594), a humanistic poet and mathematician, and a Knight of the Order of Montesa, seems to have been a better poet than mathematician. His treatise has been called "more than commonly worthless" (De Morgan, A budget of paradoxes, 1872, p. 36), but it ends with a charming poem. In the first verse, the disappointed squared circle wonders who robbed it of its former noble form, and in the second Falco replies. With the direction line (containing the quire signature and/or catchword) shaved on 4 pages, but still in very good condition, binding fine. Woodblock with the Arabic title “Book of the Song of songs of Solomon” followed by a reference to the Hebrew title “Shir hashirim” (Song of songs) transcribed in Arabic, probably produced in the Ottoman regions of the Levant for a rural printing office. A rare survival of an 18th-century printerÂ’s woodblock from the Islamic world, and also an important witness to cross-cultural printing for minority audiences in the Ottoman world. We include an inked impression of the block on 18th-century paper paper, clearly not printed recently, because it does not show the worm holes that now appear in the block. VIII, 71, [1 blank] pp.First edition of a guide for young artists detailing the craft of drawing landscapes, including the rendition of shadows, use of water colour and hand-colouring of engraved prints. The author Evert Maaskamp (1769-1834), at the time a well-known Dutch engraver and print publisher, made all but one of the plates. They include the same two landscape scenes in two and three different techniques (engraving, aquatint, and hand-coloured aquatint), a romantic scene with a tree in the foreground and a bridge in the back, and a frontispiece with guide lines for (horizon) perspective.With a 5 cm tear along a fold of the frontispiece and a tiny tear in the margin, the boards slightly rubbed along the extremities, and the spine discoloured. [1], 142, [1] ll.Second recorded copy of the second edition of the extremely rare first spiritual "handbook", a posthumous collection of 35 short lessons and advisory texts plus an appendix, all written by the leading Dutch Anabaptist and "arch-heretic" David Joris (ca. 1501/02-1556), the nine dated ones from 1544 to the year of his death. Many remained unpublished until they appeared in the Handt-boecxken around 1590, taken from Joris's manuscripts in the hands of his family. The appendix contains an untitled series of 16 brief advisory texts, each beginning with a different letter of the alphabet in order from A to Q. The book closes with an index, listing the 35 titles alphabetically. It brings the four Gospels together to make a single narrative, prefaced by a comparative synopsis of the content of the four Gospels. Having studied Hebrew and Greek in Ingolstadt, Andreas Osiander (1496-1552) became a priest in 1520. He subsequently came in contact with supporters of the Reformation and became a prominent Protestant leader. In 1548 he was appointed professor of theology in Königsberg. His last years there were, however, overshadowed by the bitter debates caused by his controversial doctrine of divine justice: the so-called "Osiandrische Streit". Osiander's writings consist for the most part of expositions of the scripture, sermons and essays on the theological controversies of the day.Osiander's present Harmony of the Gospels is his only work that was also published outside Germany. "The Hawaiian National Bibliography is intended to be a comprehensive, annotated record of all printed works on some aspect of the political, religious, social, cultural, and scientific history of the Hawaiian Islands from 1780 to 1900. The third volume is divided into three parts, with separate title-pages, but a single sequence of page numbers. Dumbar left it unfinished at his death, breaking off after the first part of volume four. It was published by the "Compagnie der Vaderlandsche Historie" (active from 1779 to 1810). This company included the six publishers in the imprint of the present volumes. As a part of their business venture, they published new editions continuing the Hedendaagsche historie-series to complete the description of the Dutch Republic. The dates on the title-pages of the four volumes are 1781, 1790, 1792 and 1803 respectively, but volumes 1 and 3 were published in two (1781, 1786) and three (1792, 1798, 1801) instalments respectively. First Dutch edition of the first 3 volumes of The modern part of an universal history, devoted to the life of Muhammad and the history of Arabia under the first four Caliphs to the taking of Baghdad by the Mongols (1258), which put an end to the Abbasid Caliphate. The work, based partly on George Sale's authoritative studies on the Quran and Arabian history, includes fine views of Baalbek and the Ka'ba in Mecca. The Universal history met with great success and was admired by Edward Gibbon, Joseph Priestly and Voltaire. Krauss (1655-1719) was a famous artist, engraver and publisher in Augsburg, South Germany during the second half of the 17th century. He was one of the most influential artists of the baroque period in the south of Germany. This work contains 120 numbered plates, with two illustrations each - one biblical scene, in a golden border, on the upper half of the plate and the lower half of the plate contains a circular emblem within a eleborately decorated frame. These distinct frames and the use of certain colours are characteristic of the German baroque style.
