Description:
Saint John: McKillop & Johnston, 1876. First edition (135 pp.). Octavo, in brown publisher’s cloth, gilt titles to front cover. Boldly SIGNED on the ffep by its owner ‘Eugene D. Wood, River Hebert, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia’ and on the rear paste-down as ‘Capt. E. D. Wood/ Schr. Wandrian/ Boston’. Connolly intended this self-teacher for the ‘young and inexperienced Mariner’, and it seems Wood first acquired it as a young seaman, as his several signatures (There are four) show varying degrees of maturity. In the preface, somewhat worringly, Connolly requests ‘any of my friends who may find discrepancies in this work to tell or communicate with me, as some may have crept in; having no assistant, I have worked every question myself.’ His self-teacher includes instruction in such matters as longitude by chronometer, finding latitude by reduction of meridian, and parallel sailing. Capt. Wood and the Wandrian (OE: wanderer), a three-masted… Read more

Description:

New York: A. O. Moore, 1858. First edition (x,  291,  index, adverts).  Small octavo (19cm) in brown publisher’s cloth with impressed decoration, gilt titles to spine (faded); illustrated with twelve engraved plates and numerous in-text engravings. Warder chief proposition is that because the best farms were ‘destitute of rock for walls’ (He was writing about his experience in the midwest and south) and ‘divested’ of their timber, hedging recommends itself as the best method for enclosing fields and other properties... and especially hedges of the Osage orange, an example of which could once be found on the perimeter of Camp Kilmer in New Jersey. Therefore this comprehensive treatise, as I am sure he says somewhere, on hedging-- materials, methods, tools, etc. Light wear to top and bottom of spine, rear edge worn through in two places; endpapers browned, somewhat dry with some age spotting early and late. A clean, solid copy.

Newcastle: for the author, 1809.  Third edition, in two parts bound as one volume, Land Birds and Water Birds (xxxviii, 346; xxii, 400). Nearly three hundred wood engravings of birds plus many head and tail pieces, etc., in the inimitable Bewick style. Octavo (21 cm) in half leather over marbled paper, gilt titles and decorations to spine; generous margins framing the text and illustrations. Land Birds, first published in 1797, was seven years in the making and Water Birds, published in 1804, five (All the while, of course, Bewick carried on the work of his busy design and engraving business). The result, taken together with his Quadrupeds, as Jenny Uglow says in her admirable biography Nature’s Engraver (Faber 2006), ‘brought nature to life, and revived the nearly forgotten art of wood engraving’ (306). Thomas Bewick (1753- 1828), a contemporary of William Blake, confined his work to more ordinary subjects than those addressed by that mystic poet- engraver. Large folio (45 cm) in three-quarter brown faux leather cloth over textured maroon cloth, gilt decoration and new gilt title on label, marbled edges; frontis portrait of Harrison in ambassador’s uniform (probably Peruvian); fifty-eight views, illustrations, and approximately two hundred pedigrees including, for example, those of Queen Victoria and George Washington. Description:
London: Longman, et al., 1836. First edition (vi [vii], 101; iv, 67, sources), illustrated with 44 wood engravings (Eyton calls them ‘woodcuts’) in the text, together with a number of tailpieces in the manner of Thomas Bewick by ‘Mr. Mark’ (a cat steals a distracted angler’s catch). Tall octavo (23cm x 15cm) in three-quarter green morocco over complimentary marbled paper, gilt titles to spine, five raised bands, t.e.g. A History captures those rare resident birds and occasional wanderers not included in Bewick’s British Birds, such as the Egyptian Vulture. Eyton’s catalogue sorts out the nomenclature which, says Eyton, has become tangled as between old and new names. A fine, clean copy with only the slightest edge wear.
