Description:
Tokyo: Shinchosha, 1984. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fine. Signed, first Japanese-language edition of this significant later work by the author of "The Woman in the Dunes." The front endpaper (which is to say the rear endpaper, the book being bound back-to-front in the traditional Japanese style) has been signed, dated (November 8, 1984), and inscribed by Abe to long-time Knopf senior editor Charles Elliott. The inscription is entirely in Japanese, although Abe has also added his first name in a stylized Arabic script. Octavo (5.5 x 8 in.); 333pp.; black cloth with red titles and panel design, in slipcase. A fine, as new copy in a very good slipcase, which lacks the original tissue paper covering, and shows partial fading to the spine of the red bellyband. Hakobune Sakura-Maru concerns an archetypal Abe protagonist: a recluse who, obsessed with the imminent end of the world via nuclear holocaust, constructs an "ark" inside of an abandoned mine, only to see it invaded by a horde of… Read More

Description:
NY: Random House, 1973. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. First edition of a book generally acknowledged as the first to seriously consider the effectiveness of MDMA and related drugs as facilitators in the psychotherapeutic process. MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy, E, or molly, is a psychoactive drug first synthesized in Germany in 1912. During the 1970s, it gained significant traction as a therapeutic aid, with Naranjo, a Chilean psychiatrist and early LSD experimenter, positioning himself at the forefront of the drug's proponents. MDMA remained legal until 1985, when its rising use as a party drug brought it under the scrutiny of Reagan- era DEA regulators. In addition to MDMA, Naranjo also here evaluates the clinical potential of MDA, harmaline, and ibogaine. An important if somewhat overlooked work, one that feels particularly timely given the renewal of interest in recent years in MDMA and other psychoactive substances as treatment modalities for depression, PTSD, and other… Read More

NY: Farrar Straus Giroux, 1982. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First edition. Octavo; 216pp.; Orange boards, black quarter-cloth, in dust jacket. Signed by Babbitt on the title page. Herbert Rowbarge details the successful but unhappy life of the titular character through the lens of his adult twin daughters. Having been separated from his own twin brother at birth, Rowbarge spends most of his life struggling under the burden of his unknown loss. Babbitt identified Herbert Rowbarge as her personal favorite among her books. Light shelfwear, minor waterspotting to textblock top, and a couple of minor spots of soiling to front endpaper. In a price-clipped jacket showing moderate rubbing. A very good plus copy in like jacket of this elegantly written short novel, something of an outlier in the oeuvre of a writer best known for Tuck Everlasting and her other young-adult novels. An exemplary work of prose, uncommon signed.

NY: St. Martin's Press, 1979. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 4to. 187pp. Blue vinyl boards, gilt spine titles. First edition. Signed and inscribed by Richardson on the title page: "For Deem and Bradbury / I hope you like this as much as I have admired your work." Also laid in is a typed note to "Brad" from John W. Ripley, editor of the Shawnee County Historical Society Bulletin, who recommends both Richardson and his book, while also making reference to Richardson's recent marriage, "one of the lovliest and most unique ceremony imaginable." The presumed recipients were graphic designer J. Bradbury Thompson, a Topeka native, and his wife Della Deen. Our research has been unable to determine whether "Deem" was indeed a nickname of Mrs. Thompson, or whether Ripley made a mistake that Richardson then repeated.
