Description:
Orig. pub.1988. Print on Demand Edition 2016. Three volumes, 1,016 pp., 37 maps, new introduction and indexes Henry Augustus Middleton Smith was a federal judge, attorney, scholar, landowner, and successful planter who fostered historical studies of South Carolina through his own writings and through his position as vice president of the South Carolina Historical Society for twenty years. His studies of the towns, plantations, baronies, and river communities of the early colonial period appeared regularly in the South Carolina Historical (and Genealogical) Magazine and are considered to be path-breaking in methodology and historical perspective. Working from land records (colonial grants, inventories, memorials, wills, warrants, and plats), Smith traced ownership of land, constructed genealogies of the planter families, and devised an unusual series of large maps to illustrate his articles. Of necessity, the maps have been reduced to print in these volumes but they are still useful to indicate the… Read More

Description:
Orig. pub. London 1779. Reprinted 1962, 1971. Print on Demand Edition 2015. The set Dr. Alexander Hewatt (or Hewat) is known as the first historian of South Carolina and is best known for this two-volume work. He was a Presbyterian minister in Charleston from 1763 to 1777. Not sympathetic with the Patriot cause, he returned to England in 1775 but remained interested in South Carolina until his death in 1828. While the books are primarily South Carolina material with a strong Charleston and lowcountry emphasis, he also devotes considerable space to Virginia, North Carolina as a part of the Carolinas colony, and Georgia, in particular in Volume II. His history includes observations of the peoples of the area, accounts of slaves and the institution of slavery, and accounts of the Indians. He pays due attention to agriculture and economics in the colony. In his discussion of political events, he was obviously biased against the Proprietors and the Anglican Church but for the Royal government and the… Read More

Orig. pub. Charleston 1809. Reprinted 1959-60, 1968, 1971 from 1858 ed.. Print on Demand Edition 2009. The set This two-volume history of South Carolina, written by a Charleston physician, legislator, and one of the first historians of the state, covers the events of South Carolina history from 1670 to 1808. The first volume is the more historical one with much of the volume dealing with the Revolution. The second volume is valuable for its social and economic history, statistical accounts, and biographical sketches. Volume 1 deals with civil history - an account of the proprietary government from 1670 to 1719 and the royal government from 1720 to 1776 - and military history from 1670 to 1776, including contests with the Spanish, the Indians, and pirates in addition to its coverage of the Revolution. Orig. pub. Atlanta 1932. Reprinted 1978, 1979, 1984, 1999. Print on Demand Edition 2014. ii, 530 pp., new index Lumpkin County, gold capital of North Georgia, was formed in 1932 from Cherokee, Habersham, and Hall counties. This book traces the early history of the area, covers the economic and social impact of the gold discovery, and then details the general history of the county up to 1932. A general account of the original inhabitants, the Cherokee Indians, is followed by a description of the "period of Intrusion," when Indians, the Federal Government, Georgia, and individual settlers competed with each other for land in the area. This conflict was ultimately resolved by a land lottery dividing the territory among white settlers and removing the Indians to western lands. Chapters deal with the earliest settlement in Auraria and the county seat, Dahlonega. The U.S. Branch Mint at Dahlonega is discussed. Lists include muster rolls of over 750 Civil War veterans and all World War I soldiers. The book… Read More

Orig. pub. Boston 1883. Reprinted 1965, 1966, 1969. Print on Demand Edition 2016. the set This is the "classic" work on the history of Georgia through the Revolutionary War by Charles Colcock Jones Jr., one of the most versatile and prolific historical writers of all time. He was the first native-born Georgian to write a history of his state. In his U.S. IANA, Wright Howes called this a "most scholarly history of the colonial and revolutionary period of this state." The history received accolades from fellow historians for "its style and extensive use of original sources." Volume One deals with the aboriginal and colonial times while Volume Two covers the revolutionary period. Georgia was founded by James Oglethorpe, a young philanthropist who was inspired to find a refuge for "unfortunate individuals, confined for debt, of respectable connections and guilty of no crime." In granting the charter for the colony in 1732, the King was motivated by the anxiety of the Carolinians to establish a buffer to… Read More

The author treats extensively the Indian era and the struggles of the first settlers with the Indians and with the Spanish in East Florida. A chapter is devoted to the attempt by pioneer Elijah Clarke to set up the independent Republic of Trans-Oconee. The participation of Wilkinson County residents in the "filibustering" expedition of French "Citizen Jean Genet" is discussed as is the county in the War of 1812. Other chapters deal with the development of the community by the early settlers including their churches, schools, and militia organizations. Description:
Orig. pub. Charleston 1859. Reprinted 1960. Print on Demand Edition 2009 from 1859 ed. (Vol. I) and 1910 ed. (Vol. II). xxiv, 494 pp. John H. Logan, physician, educator, and newspaper editor of Abbeville, used official records and journals kept by traders and naturalists in this history of upper South Carolina from earliest times to 1760. The first half of the book is natural history, with much on the Indians. After this, he turns to early traders, hunters, and settlers. There are descriptions of the country, the natives, and the animals and then later developments after the arrival of the Europeans, with personal treatment of many individuals. Logan never published what was intended to be the second volume of his history. After publication of Volume I in 1859, the Civil War interrupted his concluding work. His notes, which were intended for Volume II, disappeared from his estate after his death. One biographical sketch says they were lost in a fire. Historian Lyman C. Draper had copied Logan's notes… Read More

A pine tree on the north bank of the Black River, called the King's Tree by an early explorer, became the focal point of settlement in what is now Williamsburg County, and gave the name to the county seat. This history gives an account of settlement under the Lords Proprietors and the names of everyone who had settled there by 1737. It is particularly rich in genealogical material, contained in sketches of individuals, lists of county officers, ministers and members of churches, early documents, settlers and officials, wills with names of family members involved, sketches of Revolutionary War officials, and land claims and owners in 1788. Genealogical information is also found in the Census of 1790; taxpayers and amounts paid in 1811; Civil War muster rolls with officers, deaths, and excerpts from diaries; and lists of teachers, officers of banks, and soldiers in the… Read More

Orig. pub. Fayetteville, NC, 1857-58. Reprinted 1961, 1966, 1969. Print on Demand Edition 2016. the set Francis L. Hawks was born in New Bern, NC. He was a lawyer, Episcopal priest, and college president. According to the late North Carolina historian, Dr. Hugh T. Lefler, "He had the broadest scholarship and literary attainments of any of the nineteenth-century North Carolina historians. . . .his two-volume history is of high quality, scholarly, original, and according to a competent contemporary reviewer remarkably sound and accurate." Volume One reprints many rare and valuable documents including the Raleigh charter of 1584, Barlowe's narrative, the account of the Grenville expedition, and Thomas Hariot's narrative, all dealing with the four separate expeditions (1584-1590) sent out by Sir Walter Raleigh to settle "Virginia." Although these expeditions ended up on the North Carolina coast, they helped lay the groundwork for the first permanent settlement at Jamestown twenty years later. Hawks's… Read More

The early expeditions into and settlement of the mountains of the state led to the formation of Buncombe County in 1792. Early county records and court proceedings reveal the names of the early settlers. Volume 2 includes: a description of the mountains; the early history of Asheville and the surrounding towns; Civil War and Reconstruction; roads and transportation; buildings, schools, and churches; agriculture and industries; and biographies of prominent citizens. Orig. pub. Birmingham 1900. Reprinted 1975, 1988. Print on Demand Edition 2013. 773 pp., illus., index Pickett's history, one of the most valuable works on the history of the Southern country, is an account of the territory of Alabama prior to its admission as a state with later chapters containing many biographical sketches of men prominent in the later developments of the commonwealth. The Annals by Owen, historical facts in outline fashion, continue that history from statehood in 1819 to 1900. Alabama was settled by the Spanish, French, and British during the colonial period. These early settlers immediately encountered native Indians and one of the strengths of this work is its treatment of the Indians of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana including the Mobilians, Chatots, Thomez, Tensas, Chocktaws, Chickasaws, Cherokees, and others. Chapters deal with the French and Spanish in Alabama and Mississippi; the establishment of the Louisiana Territory; the Jesuit presence in Louisiana; conflicts… Read More

Orig. pub. Spartanburg, SC 1928. Reprinted 1993. Print on Demand Edition 2018. (ii), 296 pp., frontis., new index Among the early settlers of Spartanburg County was the Wofford family. Some years prior to the Revolution, five brothers - William, Joseph, James, John, and Benjamin - came from Maryland and settled on the Tyger River in lower Spartanburg County. This history begins with excerpts from the minutes of the Wofford Memorial Association (1893-1914). Among those excerpts are historical sketches of the five brothers. Members of the Wofford family later migrated from Spartanburg County and are found in Tennessee, Mississippi, Missouri, Louisiana, Georgia, and Texas. The Rev. Benjamin Wofford, son of Capt. Joseph and Martha Llewellyn Wofford, who left $100,000 in 1850 to found Wofford College commands considerable treatment throughout the book. The early years of the college are also discussed. Brief sketches of other members of the family and their descendants include: Joseph Llewellyn Wofford,… Read More
