Description:
London, Riddle & Couchman, Reproduction assisted by Messrs. Elliott & Fry's Photo, March 3. 1890. Image size 40 x 37 cm (paper size 56 x 42 cm); one horizontal fold, a few very faint spots; otherwise clean and well-kept. This fine and large portrait of the celebrated African explorer is based on a photo produced by Barnett & Fry's photographic establishment, the leading Victorian commercial portrait photographers, and finely printed in terracotta on a light yellow toned background. It is probably the largest not painted Stanley portrait, and we were unable to locate it in any museum or gallery, including the National Portrait Gallery. Not even Fry's photo seems to be known. The date was printed on a tiny label, in terracotta as well, and pasted into the lower right corner. Provenance: After his marriage to Dorothy ('Dolly') Tennant Stanley decided that the couple must have a country home, and 'plunged into house hunting with something of his old vigor' (Bierman, Dark Safari, p. 350).… Read More

1867. London, Edward Moxon & Co., 1867. 8vo. Original terracotta cloth, lettered and ornamented in gilt; pp. [iv], 403; with a folding map; light rubbing to extremities; cloth a little marked, very light spotting to map and a little offsetting to title-page; otherwise a very good copy of a great rarity. First edition, very rare. With a folding map with the author's route in red. This text, of Pollington's travels, is an 'almost exact transcription of a diary, kept during the interval between August 1865 and April 1866' (Preface). Presented here is the author's own voice in its entirety, with 'no after thoughts; no descriptions of the origins of peoples, or the former state of places,' with nothing extracted from encyclopaedias, it is purely Pollington's own account. The author also adds, 'the names of places and persons are in almost every sense spelt phonetically' (Preface). Viscount Pollington had been the travelling companion with Kinglake in the Ottoman Empire in the 1830s and some of… Read More

Description:
London, John Murray, 1840. Small 8vo. Original salmon ribbed cloth, lettered in gilt, ruled in blind; pp. vi, xxxvi, 392, four folding maps (including plan of Constantinople), light fading and minimal rubbing to cloth, otherwise very clean and fresh. First edition of an early title in John Murray's series on Hand-Books for Travellers, after the initial one for Travellers on the Continent (first, 1836 or 38, second edition 1839), written by John Murray himself. This guide book was based on and compiled from the leading authorities and travellers of the 1830s. John Murray III had studied geology and mineralogy in Edinburgh in 1827. 'In the following year Murray embarked on his career in the family publishing house at 50 Albemarle Street, London. Visits to the continent from 1829 prepared the way for his first major publishing initiative. Struck by the difficulty of obtaining the kind of information he wanted, he filled notebooks with history, architecture, geology, and practical details. On his return… Read More

Description:
1918. [London], Admiralty War Staff, Intelligence Division, November, 1918. 8vo. Original black cloth, lettered in gilt; pp. 556; a very good and clean copy. Second, considerably enlarged edition (the first edition of 1916 had 360 pages). After Townshend's catastrophic defeat at Kut in April 1916 the Mesopotamia Commission of Inquiry was set up, and the Admiralty was convinced that only good intelligence about the available infastructure, man and animal power, as well as mineral and agricultural resources in still Ottoman Iraq was vital for a possible advance into these territories. These handbooks correct existing sources of information and maps, and analyze the country's physical and economic geography. Interesting in this considerably enlarged second edition is the much extended section on Oil and Bitumen. 'In the southern and central parts of this area there are extensive belts of country where the presence of oil is known or suspected' (p. 59). COPAC lists only three complete sets in British… Read More

1894. London, F.V White & Co., 1894. 8vo. Original green cloth, decorated in red to upper and lower covers, and gilt to spine; pp. [4], ii, [2], 314, [2]; some fading to covers and minor wear, occasional foxing throughout and offset to endpapers, clear text and binding sound, a very good copy of a scarce book. First edition. Collected short stories from writer of supernatural horror Hume Nesbit. Nesbit was fond of ghoulish supernatural themes driving ordinary people to desperate (and usually tragic ends). The stories in this volume include "The Demon Spell," "A Face at the Window" and "The Odic Touch", amongst others. The eponymous Haunted Station is counted amongst his most popular stories, and is frequently reprinted in horror anthologies. Nesbit was also a keen artist (though he enjoyed less popular success in this field) and he provided the frontispiece for this volume, which depicts a haunted moonlit seascape from the story "An Ocean Dream". Description:
[London?], Printed in the Yeare 1647. Small 4to. Disbound, pp. [2], 6, a little toned, but very clean and crisp. Very rare sole printing. In the summer of 1647 (one exisiting copy is known to be dated by hand July 1st) the war (which in the end killed a higher proportion of the British population than the First World War) had dragged on for almost five years and Parliament was gaining the upper hand, mainly by installing the County Committees, staffed by loyal men. These functionaries collected the taxes Parliament needed, rounded up horses and supplies for the army, and carried out any other commands Parliament sent out. This and the growing power of the army (and taxation for its maintenance) led to support for the Royalist cause and Charles I. This call to arms specifies the grievances against the Parliamentarian committees and denounces their brutality. The people rising up were not so much in favour of the king, but his rule was considered less unpleasant and burdensome than Parliament. And… Read More

First edition of the substantially enlarged version (first, and shorter, 1883). Beecher, brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe, was an effective American nineteenth century orator, noted for his support of the abolition of slavery and the suffrage of women, as well as his friendship with some of the century's most famous writers, including Henry Thoreau, Mark Twain, and Walt Whitman. Among his many daring exploits were the Beecher Bibles, trunks of guns sent to abolitionist settlers for self defence, marked as Bibles. This is the main work by the French Catholic missionary (1765-1848) who lived for some thirty years in India, attempting to convert people to Catholicism. He dressed and lived in the Hindu manners and wrote the best book on the subject for much of the 19th century. The East India company had bought the Abbé's manuscript in 1816, and published it.
