Description:
Tel-Aviv: Lev-Hadash; New York: Yehudah, 1928 (Tomorrow: a stand in the war of ideas) Quarto 23.5x16 cm., wrappers, Issues 1, 3, 7–10. Six 32-page issues. Illustrated wrappers signed by Pesach Ir-Shai, with the motto “Hofesh ha-davor ainu rashot 'ala Huvah” (“searching for speech is not elective but mandatory”). The majority of the texts (both prose and poetry) appears to be by Hameiri. Avigador Hameiri was born in Hungary and served in the Austrian army during World War I. He was captured in 1916 by the Russians, but was released following the Revolution, and emigrated to Palestine in 1921, where he worked on the Ha-aretz newspaper. Pesach Irshai (born István Irsai in Budapest) studied architecture but became a painter and graphic designer. He designed a sans serif Hebrew typeface, which may be the one used in the “Apologies” section of each issue. This journal ceased publication in 1940. OCLC locates individual copies at OSU, Stanford, UT Austin, and Yale.

Description:
Budapest: Taltos-kiadasa, 1916 Quarto 26.3 x 21.4 cm, wrappers, xvii, 105 plates, cover and book design by author. Ede Toroczkai-Wigand (Hungarian, 1869-1945) was an architect, builder and author of a number of books on architecture and the design traditions of Transylvania. He designed and built a number of projects in a Hungarian secessionist, arts-&-crafts style which has been termed National Romanticism, a style found chiefly in Transylvania. This was developed most notably by Toroczkai-Wigand, Karoly Kos and Marcell Komor. His books, such as the present one, celebrate this style with drawings, photos and paintings of his projects, with settings in the landscape and interior work. This copy very good with owner inscription. Six copies found in North American libraries.

Prague: Aventinum, 1925 (A Goose on a String) Octavo, wrappers bound in cloth, 120pp. Book design, typography by Karel Teige, fine photocollage cover by Otokar Mrkvicka. Six screenplays, with topics of the day championed by Devetsil. Jiri Mahen (1882-1939), a cousin of Vaclav Vancura, was a novelist, playwright and essayist. These screenplays are highly experimental. Devetsil's earmarks redolent throughout in book design. A champion of free public discourse and open way of life, Mahen suffered so much depression from the Nazi occupation that he committed suicide soon after the invasion. Rare, with two holdings found in North American libraries.
