A Very Good to Very Good + and somewhat askew copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original mustard yellow cloth with the front board illustrated with a spider in a web and with oak tree branch and leaves also in black, and the spine panel being lettered in both black and in gilt and illustrated in gilt, being number 193 in Holt's Leisure Hour Series. The front pastedown and the facing side of the front free endpaper list titles in the Leisure Hour Series and those in the rear list "LATE LEISURE HOUR NOVELS". Several leaves of the page block protrude beyond the others but remain firmly attached and the volume's binding shows some typical soiling and general wear. Copies of this work are presently rather uncommon to the market.

A not quite Very Good copy of this later edition, bound in brown leather with the spine lined, lettered, and decorated in gilt and each board lined and decorated in gilt, complete with eight (8) illustrations by Phiz and with a prior seller's note loosely laid in and stating, among other things, that this 1899 first edition was issued in both dated and undated copies. The boards are worn and show general wear and tide marks, the leaves some some scattered tide marks, a few marginal chips, and a repair to the upper outer corner of the leave hosting pp 121/122. Each pastedown bears a bookplate with the one to the front pastedown shows a Latin motto above which is a deer above which a knight and the rear bookplate, also illustrated, bears the name of book collector William Crampton. A Very Good + copy of the first edition, first printing, in book form bound in three-quarters brown leather and marbled boards, and with the leather having inner borders decorated with double gilt lines, the spines being lettered and decorated in gilt with the title, author name, volume numbers being on green leather blocks, and the top edge of each volume's close page block in gilt as well. The leather shows some modest rubbing at the edges and Volume I is bound without a half-title. The work is illustrated with sixty-four (64) illustrations by Marcus Stone (thirty-two being full plates printed separately and thirty-two being vignettes printed with the text and incorporating the initial letters to the thirty-two chapters they head. The binding shows little wear and the gilt to the front board and spine are bright. The closed page block's top edge is also in gilt and the pastedowns and facing side of each free endpaper are elegantly decorated. The RARE dust jacket shows chipping and a horizontal stain to the rear panel's upper portion and the front flap us detached. A Near Fine or better copy of the first edition, first printing in an about Very Good dust jacket with some chipping and rubbing to the rear panel. On its front flap, the dust jacket states: "The present work is a product of over five years' work. It studies every important novel written by Henry James and touches upon almost every minor nouvelle or short story by this master magician of modern fiction. It is a revaluation of the entire body of Henry James' writing. It arrives at some fresh and fascinating conclusions...." The volume itself is in surprisingly nice condition with some slight bumping the upper leading corner of each board and a modest pushing at the spine ends. The closed page block's top edge is stained gray and remains in very attractive condition.
