New York: Henry Holt & Co., 1886. Hardcover. Very Good to Very Good +. A Very Good to Very Good + and somewhat askew copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original mustard yellow cloth with the front board illustrated with a spider in a web and with oak tree branch and leaves also in black, and the spine panel being lettered in both black and in gilt and illustrated in gilt, being number 193 in Holt's Leisure Hour Series. The front pastedown and the facing side of the front free endpaper list titles in the Leisure Hour Series and those in the rear list "LATE LEISURE HOUR NOVELS". Several leaves of the page block protrude beyond the others but remain firmly attached and the volume's binding shows some typical soiling and general wear. Copies of this work are presently rather uncommon to the market.

A not quite Very Good copy of this later edition, bound in brown leather with the spine lined, lettered, and decorated in gilt and each board lined and decorated in gilt, complete with eight (8) illustrations by Phiz and with a prior seller's note loosely laid in and stating, among other things, that this 1899 first edition was issued in both dated and undated copies. The boards are worn and show general wear and tide marks, the leaves some some scattered tide marks, a few marginal chips, and a repair to the upper outer corner of the leave hosting pp 121/122. Each pastedown bears a bookplate with the one to the front pastedown shows a Latin motto above which is a deer above which a knight and the rear bookplate, also illustrated, bears the name of book collector William Crampton.
