The Tenth Cavalry was organized in 1866 when Congress provided for black regiments in the reorganization bill of 1866. The Act of Increase and Fix the Military Peace Establishment of the Unite States provided "that to the six regiments of cavalry now in service, there shall be added four regiments, two of which shall be composed of colored men." These two became the Ninth and Tenth Regiments of Cavalry. Colonel Benjamin H. Grierson arrived at Fort Leavenworth to organize the regiment which then only existed on the statute books. Glass covers the organization and composition of the unit, its early field service, being Buffalo Soldiers in Arizona, and combat in Cuba and the Philippines.
